The president of the European Parliament Martin Schulz said in Buenos Aires that if finally a trade and cooperation agreement is reached between the European Union and Mercosur the United Kingdom will not benefit as a consequence of Brexit. Read full article

Disclaimer & comment rulesWell Mr Schulz since we won't be tied down by pointless and overly complicated EU red tape I'm sure we can make separate arrangements with countries in South America...or anywhere else in the world for that matter.
Aug 24th, 2016 - 06:25 am - Link - Report abuse 0I mean just how long have these 'negotiations' been going on between the EU and So Am? Since 1999! Years and years (17 and counting) of pointless talk with either one member of the EU (well mainly the French) blocking any agreement as they fear it would harm their domestic market.
So Mr Schulz, the UK will go from strength to strength, making trade deals with whom they want, when they want, and won't have the constant headache of petty infighting as currently happens in the EU.
I'll bet the UK has trade deals with So Am long before the EU does.
Exactly.
Aug 24th, 2016 - 07:22 am - Link - Report abuse 0Big whoopdy doo, Mr. Schulz!
Who cares a twopenny ***** what this guy says - he actually has no final say anyway! Has he canvassed UK public and commercial trade opinion before he spouted? - No - of course not - but then he IS in fantasy land at the moment(Argentina) so naturally he is full of fantasy!

Aug 24th, 2016 - 10:58 am - Link - Report abuse 0This doesn't make much sense. It's EU protectionism over agriculture that has caused this decades long delay.
Aug 24th, 2016 - 11:03 am - Link - Report abuse 0Since the UK is still, currently, part of the EU,and will be until we execute article fifty at least this is just another pointless spat against the UK because we dated to tell the EU that whilst we might agree with its principles we most certainly do not agree with its current practises.

It would be a greater disappointment for Mercosur ...Never happen anyway; too simplistic a view. This decalartion is probably for home propaganda purposes

A bitter personal attack, but do tell us, what do YOU 'surmise' about this statement from the EU's Mr. Schulz?
Is he just playing to the gullible provincials and outsiders of Mercosur?
A rather strange thing to bring up. Not obviously relevant and not necessarily true either, since it's not certain Britain will leave the single market and customs union, at least not straight away. If it's still in those when (if) the deal is done then Britain will benefit from the free trade deal, even if we no longer have a say in negotiating it.

Poor Martin, he does loathe the UK so. We do understand what leaving the EU means. Is he so glib about the fact he is about to lose 17% of the EU budget that we wont be paying anymore.

Aug 26th, 2016 - 12:57 am - Link - Report abuse 0I first heard about this on NPR at the time of the 'Brexit' fiasco. I didn't believe at that time but here it is in color!
Note that, on the background map, the British are claiming the original 13 colonies - including, bizarrely, Florida and Alabama. Does this claim constitute a hostile act by the British against the US? Should the US invade the UK, and the other British countries, and install a proper republican form of government in order to defend against this aggression?
@29. It's a complex thing that you uncivilised, rapacious, thieving provincials are incapable of understanding. It's a combination of a rejoinder and a joke.
Aug 26th, 2016 - 06:42 am - Link - Report abuse 0You see, the EU is similar to argieland. Ever keen to puff out its pigeon chest and claim credit for everything. Much like Rompuy Pumpy tried to claim credit for the conclusion of the Libyan civil war. What a shame that the majority of the participants weren't members of the EU. And that one, Italy, tried to pull out and interfere with the operations of the majority.
So, along with the conclusion of the latest Olympics, (Is it true that medals were awarded for getting out of Brazil alive?), the EU decided to claim how high it would have rated if it had fielded teams made up from European medal winners. It might have been an idea if the EU had counted how many of those medal winners were British.
So an MP responded in a similar fanciful manner. Was it not ludicrous for the EU to lay any sort of claim to British medals when the UK is leaving the European dictatorship?
Incidentally, I see no sign of the United States whingeing. Why are you?

You saw a graphic showing 2016 Olympic Medal counts back in June? I hope you placed some bets!
For your information (actually more for anyone else's) the map was grabbed off Wikipedia and shows all land that was ever part of the British Empire.
The tweet is a joke in rather poor taste, but since the US is not peopled entirely by histrionic morons, I don't see why they'd care.

Its been revealed that Bagpipes are bad for your health. Nasty germs and viruses lurk in pigs bladders and thrive in African Blackwood. The effects can result in a disease that addles the brains, shrinks members and nuts and leads to verbal Diarrhoea. Through close association looks like Stink caught it too.

Aug 26th, 2016 - 03:34 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You are perfectly correct in that statement, however, if you want to be fair, which you never do, all woodwind and brass instruments can harbour diseases.
As soon as you blow into any musical instrument, the expelled vapour from your lungs attaches to the tubes and crevices - it is also known as Saxophone lung
Even the humble mouth organ can cause problems.
Clyde, its the bag thats the special problem. Harbours the residue of bad breath… Otber wind instruments are easier to detox.

Aug 26th, 2016 - 06:53 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Yes true BUT it is a condition known to pipers and care must be taken to keep the chanter, drones and bag clean. More damage is done to hearing from the volume generated by the pipes. I noticed that at the world championships in Glasgow a week ago, that many bandsmen were using foam earplugs.
Trombonists, saxophinists and flautists especially have to be careful as the mould can build up unless they are kept scrupulously clean.
Especially for the saxophone which is a plumber's nightmare.
On the same tack, a computer keyboard is another spreader of diseases.

Aug 26th, 2016 - 07:42 pm - Link - Report abuse 0What century are you in...pigs bladders....
I have always used a Canmore pipe bag...
They are a breathable gore tex fabric...
The air you blow in comes out of the chanter and the drones...not the mouthpiece you buffoon...the air you blow in never comes back to the mouth....unlike other woodwind and brass instruments....
...the chanter has a reed and each of the drones have a reed, air is forced through them at great pressure then it closes like a one way valve....
The average person would not be able to actuate all four reeds at once it requires developed lungs and hardened lips to create the pressure...
Which in turn keeps you fit...
I also have a moisture trap to prevent moisture collecting inside....from the breath....
Diseases...I think not...
Stick to what you know about....
....wait a minute....

Well Mr. Think...I'm not going to pretend that I'm familiar with rosewood...
Aug 26th, 2016 - 10:47 pm - Link - Report abuse 0As I have never heard the comparison, they would be a bit of a rarity here...
I can imagine drones being made of rosewood, but not a chanter....
The chanter would probably wear rapidly as the chanter is literally wiped and rubbed to create embellishments (gracenotes) a series of very short rapid notes 1/64th of a note long...especially the low A/G Birl...(gotta roll the R with that word)...
Hense. why the preferred wood is the very dense Blackwood...
...but I'll certainly take your word for it as the Great Highland Pipes do have a very harsh sound to them....and can be heard from quite a distance...
...the old pipers joke......Can ye play ....O'er the hills and far away....;-))))))

Aug 27th, 2016 - 10:25 am - Link - Report abuse 0I think this answers your question.
Bagpipe Materials To Avoid
Materials to avoid are rosewood, cocuswood, boxwood. African blackwood is ideal, and other tonewoods like cocobolo and mopani are being used with great success in smallpipes and as mounts. If you're unsure, check the country of origin. High-quality African blackwood Great Highland Bagpipes are manufactured almost exclusively in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. The old adage You get what you pay for definitely applies here.
The problem is not so much tone but stability of the wood when turned.
African Blackwood is the best.
Anyway, Brazilian rosewood is protected by CITES and virtually unobtainable.
I had a set for a guitar which I got in 1967 but passed it on to a guitar maker in Glasgow when I finally realised I did not have good enough woodworking skills to make a guitar.
Indian rosewood-a different species- has replaced Brazilian rosewood as the wood of preference along with Madagascar rosewood which is now protected.

Only two drones as well a bass and one tenor....
