“Military sources said the soldiers were killed with 7.26, 5.56 and 9mm bullets.....”

    Sloppy reporting. It wasn't 7.26mm but 7.62.

    ---

“Those believed to be the leaders of the group, according to intelligence sources were educated at Catholic schools.”

-- That really narrows it down. The perps should be easy to identify.

“....eight to nine attackers involved given the number of footsteps...”

Amazing new investigative technology in Paraguay - counting footsteps long after an event. Rather than footprints. Simply incredible.

Of course, this could just be another problem with an incompetent translator.

And surely the question to be answered is 7.62x51 (NATO), 7.62x39 AK57 (Russian SA/Auto rifle copied mercilessly) or 7.62x54R (Russian BA Nagant rifle or present issue Heavy Machinegun)?

Maybe.... maybe 7.62 x 39mm and the bad guys using AK47 clones. Obsolete Nagant unlikely. But who knows how many AK47s or similar the Venezuelans have been furnishing. On the other hand, the Paraguayan armed forces use 7.62mm NATO weapons and the bad guys may well have gotten their hands on those. Also, back in their day (1970s and 1980s) the Soviets and their Cuban camaradas provided a lot of captured 7.62mm NATO weapons to anyone with a Che Guevara t-shirt all over South America. But it's all wild speculation at the moment.

Interesting the reporting here that the law enforcement types list the Paraguayan EPP guerrillas as “anarcho-communist environmentalists” which I think are described as eco-terrorists in other countries.
