Aerolineas official magazine refers to the Islands as the Falklands

Argentina's flag carrier Aerolineas Argentinas has been caught with its official bi-lingual magazine, “Alta”, committing a major “sin”. The magazine can be found in all aircraft seat pockets and in a reference to the Falkland/Malvinas Islands, the company apparently apologized for having committed a “translation excess”. More of the usual idiocy. The article in English correctly referred to the place name in English, and the Silly People can't understand that?

What is even more intriguing is that the Ministry of Truth censors allowed the observation by the Argie person being interviewed that the Falklands are not Argentine !! (“....such a beautiful place, it hurts that it's not ours...”)

“ one of the rules is that proper names usually are not translated”

    “En Londres” ... “In London”

    Um, yeah, sure they're not...

“The complainants point out that one of the rules is that proper names usually are not translated,”

In that case, the rules were broken. The proper name Falklands should also have been used in the Argentinian version.

Yet another example of how the Argentine Leopard is totally unable to change its spots -clamber out of 19th century colonialism , and finally enter the modern world.
Good for Aerolineas - but maybe they might have less upset the frantic lunatics in B.A. if they had given the UN English name from their side of Malvinas/Falklands or Falklands/Malvinas.
Malvinas is indeed as Spanish language name NOT English. As others have said - do they say Londres or Nueva York in their English section!

So, when the FIG print materials in Spanish, do they write 'Las Malvinas' or 'Las Falklands'?

I am a fervent supporter of the Falklands cause.

BUT, I have no problem when Argentina, in Spanish, calls the islands Malvinas. Equally, I have no problem when the French call the islands Malouinnes. Both these uses are used officially by the United Nations.

Now, what the Chinese and the Russians call the islands is totally incorrect but then, of course, they support the ill founded and stupid Argentine claims to sovereignty of the islands which is, of court based on fairy tales, myths, lies and misinterpreted historical events.

Nothing more logical that Argentina reconsiders its mistake as for the British Falklands. Times have changed and theFalkklands were NEVER and WILL NEVER be partofArgentina.

'The complainants point out that one of the rules is that proper names usually are not translated', .....What, you mean like the answer to the second question using 'Europa' and than translating it in English to.........wait for it..... 'Europe'. Yeah, sounds like you made that rule up.

”In effect in what is considered the main piece of the magazine Alta, an interview with one of Argentina's leading best-selling authors and historian,...I thought maybe Victoria Xipolitakis was a best selling author. In the news yesterday her biography?? was selling for a total of 950 pesos...more than legitimate writers. Unbelievable.

    @17 Think
Now why would that be? Have you had a lot of sockpuppets here?

In a sane world, everyone would write Falklands in English and Malvinas in Spanish and no one would care either way. But we don't live in a sane world. The name used has political implications, hence the ridiculous fuss.

I had a look at the PDF produced by the FIG about the student competition, and it's exactly the same. They write 'Reino Unido', but 'las Islas Falkland'.

The people complaining should just admit that it's all political posturing rather than making excuses about not translating names.

    Demon Tree @ 19

Not sure who's “sock” you are either... but your somewhat friendly repartee with “Think”, sounds a bit contrived, just like the failed subterfuges he tried to pull with some of his previous sock puppets and alter-egos.
He would try to establish an 'independent' false identity by having fake discussions with the new identity.

    ”(19) Mr. DemonTree

Nope, no sockpuppets from this one and only humble Patagonian..“

Of course, those of us who have been on here for several years remember his colossal blunder wherein he exposed his most elaborate false-persona, ”Dove OverDover“.
Commander DoD as we called him, was an outdated caricature of a retired RN officer who claimed Scots blood and a hatred of the Engrish. He was racist and pretentious, and generally offensive all around - Think's doppelgänger.

He was replaced shortly after by ”Voice“, an offensive sock claiming to live in Scotland and hating the Engrish.

Not much of a stretch, is it?!

”Think“ also exposed his low-key 5th columnist persona, ”Surfer“.

    ”Think/Voice/DoD/Surfer/etc. is a known liar.

So, carry on with your charade, it's all very amusing - can't wait until the carefully non-partisan DT reveals his true nature.

Repartee? I replied to him once in this comment thread!

I've never seen you post here before so you probably haven't actually read anything I've written. I haven't seen Think show any interest in some of the topics I've commented on and I'm not non-partisan. It makes little difference who you think I am anyway; you can judge my comments on their own merits.

Did I ever call you a Turnip?

As I wrote a couple of years ago (to a Shilean poster that, curiously, also was accused of being one sockpuppet of mine) ...:
...“I can assure you that the criteria I use to include any poster into my “Turnip” list is quite stringent... It involves, at least a combination of personal insults, complete disregard for comprobable facts and unjustified haughtiness...”

Not sure exactly what I'm supposed to have done to meet your 'stringent' criteria, but I'd say you've comfortably managed to meet them all yourself in just those two threads.

For crissake, Hepathetic, don't you understand that England doesn't have any malvinas? I do recall that Argentina has a Malvinas, in Córdoba province. It's a dirt-poor, backward, and nasty little town, like so many places in that part of Argentina. Perhaps you can get Córdoba to return your long-lost malvinas within 25 years.
