A giant cruise ship in Italy has left devastation in its wake after destroying a pier and sinking small vessels as it pulled away from shore. The Carnival Vista was just meters from its berth in Messina, Sicily when the prop wash from its thrusters caused a wild set of waves to topple a boat pier. Read full article

I think given all the problems Carnival has had with ship operations, fires in engine room spaces and a lot more besides perhaps it is now time for a complete management shake-up because the present lot have consistently shown they do not understand marine engineering advances.
True.
Sep 09th, 2016 - 01:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Why shake up Carnival when the Italian harbor PILOT was at the controls? This one was not Carnivals issue, it was an incompetent pilot who did not realize the force caused by thrusters of such a large vessel.

Sep 16th, 2016 - 11:03 am - Link - Report abuse 0I have had many high powered cars and even more fast motorbikes.
Some of my friends wanted to have a 'go' on various machines and guess what I always cautioned: DON'T move the throttle more than a 'break' until you get used to it.
Given the fact that this ship is unique, very powerful and totally new to the pilot don't you think the bridge officer should have cautioned the pilot accordingly?
Pilots are there to 'control' the ship out of port, that doesn't mean they have to 'handle' the controls themselves.
I realize my view is somewhat damaged by the fact the pilot was an Italian. I have many Italian friend and worked in Caserta for three years so I know the Italian mentality is a bit 'balls out and see what it can do'. But so should the Captain.
