The United States on Friday gave Chilean President Michelle Bachelet declassified CIA documents confirming that former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet personally ordered the 1976 assassination of opposition leader Orlando Letelier. US Deputy Secretary of State Heather Higginbottom presented the documents to Bachelet during a ceremony on the site of the killing in the US capital, two days after the 40th anniversary of the brazen attack. Neve too late to get a better knowledge about the murderous nature of individuals such as Pinochet, somebody who was lauded by many as saving Chile from an allegedly “murderous” Socialist president Salvador Allende (democratically elected).

I don't see the problem. If the communists had retained control of the Chilean government, they would surely have eliminated much of their opposition -- it's the way things are done. The mistake here was letting Letelier leave Chile to stir up enough trouble that he had to be taken care of outside the country.

All the crap coming out of the woodwork, eh Riki.

Just what were you doing in The Dark Country that necessitated you running off to Canada?

The ONLY thing that pissed the Yanks off was that they did it on the American mainland.

Seems they missed the current commie arsewipe ruining the country as all the women 'leaders' in SA have done so far: whatta mistakka to makka!

When are these powerful women going to have a functioning brain? Never, it seems.

The way things are going America is about to find out for itself if brain damaged 'Hill' gets in. Just loved the way the extra strong secret service guys chucked her in the bottom of the Transit! Didn't think much of the doppelganger though, clearly a double: NO bodyguards - whatta another mistakka to makka!

    You just have to laugh.

    Mr. Massot

As president, Allende adopted a policy of nationalization of industries and collectivisation; due to these and other factors, increasingly strained relations between him and the legislative and judicial branches of the Chilean government culminated in a declaration by Congress of a ”constitutional breakdown”. A centre-right majority including the Christian Democrats, whose support had enabled Allende's election, denounced his rule as unconstitutional and called for his overthrow by force. On 11 September 1973, the military moved to oust Allende in a coup d'état sponsored by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).[2][3][4] As troops surrounded La Moneda Palace, he gave his last speech vowing not to resign.[5] Later that day, Allende shot himself with an assault rifle,[6] according to an investigation conducted by a Chilean court with the assistance of international experts in 2011.[7]”

He was elected as the head of a minority government.

Here are the papers in question: http://nsarchive.gwu.edu/NSAEBB/NSAEBB560-CIA-report-concludes-Pinochet-behind-Letelier-Moffit-bombing-in-1976-and-calls-it-act-of-state-terrorism/

There has been a certain amount of reporting in the US over the years. It has been well understood that this murder was the result of a Chilean government run operation since the 1980s.

Why the US supported the illegitimate Chilean regime is something I have never understood.

    ---------

Why the chilenos put up with Allende and his Soviet- supported government for as long as they did is something I have never understood. Even during the “No” vote in the 1988 national plebiscite, Pinochet still had a higher level of acceptance than Allende ever did (Allende 1970 36 percent; Pinochet 1988 43 percent) .

I found this article particularly amusing.

    https://panampost.com/nelsonalbino/2016/09/22/what-was-chile-really-like-under-salvador-allendes-rule/

The guy reminds me of Balmaceda. The politics are different, but the plot is the same, President decides to avoid congressional approval of his actions and decides to act outside of the constitution. Parliament and the Military decide to step in, and the President ends up putting a bullet in his head. Like the saying goes, “History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes.”

While bloody coup d'etats have become less frequent and Latin America seems to have emerged from this convenient way of dealing with democracy, a group of MP commentators seem naturally comfortable with the idea of conveniently “fixing” things by any means available, including mass murder, torture and disappearances.
Bisley, @ 4, does not see a problem with Letelier's assassination. “If the communists had retained control of the Chilean government, they would surely have eliminated much of their opposition,” he tells us without smiling.
Kanye, @6, has found the ultimate justification for murdering Allende sympathizers.
“He was elected as the head of a minority government,” he declares.
And to think that these people call themselves members of the civilized world!

“Mass murder, torture and disappearances.” These are the hallmarks of both Communist and Fascist Regimes...Peronism is both...”

And why in hell you bring Peronism to a story about Chile and the murderous Pinochet regime?

Anyway. No matter how you try to justify it, torturing and murdering defenceless citizens, especially when using the power of the state, is widely recognized today as a crime against humanity. Not by you.

In a way, you are worse than Pinochet, who at least put his name on the line, narrowly escaping extradition from London to Spain in 1999 thanks to his pals Maggie and Bush.

You are worse because you promote Pinochet's state terrorism anonymously and in all likelihood will not dare to back your position with your first and last name.

That's all the difference between you and I, my friend.

“Why the US supported the illegitimate Chilean regime...”

U.S. support for military dictatorships in Latin America was traditional but intensified after Cuba's successful defeat of tyrant Fulgencio Batista by popular forces commanded by Fidel Castro and my compatriot Che Guevara.

As Salon.com puts it, “The ugly reality behind the mirror is that the U.S. government has a long and unbroken record of working with fascists, dictators, druglords and state sponsors of terrorism in every region of the world in its elusive but relentless quest for unchallenged global power.”

    Sad reality.

I understand your anxiety to find out personal details of chatters here, it's what your boyfriend Gauchito Drink has been doing here for years, and you appear to be on the same payroll. Glad to see you trying to lash out though, Komrade/Kamerad...and remember, I am not, and never will be your friend, since I believe there is only one way to deal with National Socialists. ;)

As for National Socialist--I am not and never was, not even close, to that political ideology. Obviously, you are in need to stick labels to compensate your lack of valid arguments.
Now, for extremism, FYI: Kirchnerism made Argentina a world leader in the matter of human rights, by opening the way to try the military with participation in crimes against humanity--trials with all the legal guarantees that set an example for Latin America and the world.
Also, there has been more tear gas and rubber bullets fired in Argentina in the last nine months than was in Argentina (with the exception of Buenos Aires city, governed by Macri) during the 12 years of Kirchner government.
Too bad you do not want to be my friend, but you are probably right--it would not work.

“And why in hell you bring Peronism to a story about Chile and the murderous Pinochet regime?”

This bears an answer. To put it bluntly, from my position, both were jack booted golpistas. Peron was a prominent figure in the ouster of Yrigoyen, and used his position to work his way into power. His admiration for Fascism and the Axis powers in world war II are a matter of record. Peron naturally comes to mind.

Come on. You said you did not approve the murders Pinochet has been found responsible for.
If you really don't approve it, just say it.
Now, in your posting above, you spend four lines talking about how bad Peron was and, again, fail to write a single word about Pinochet.
Go ahead--say it instead of distracting.

    ”Who is instigating civil unrest?”
    Why would you ask that?
Are there some more desserving of truncheons, rubber bullets and tear gas than others?
Oh yeah, if it's Maximo K and La Campora go ahead anti riot squadrons and have a field day, eh?
    Tell you what, Mr. K.
Kirchnerism sent unarmed police to protect several opponent cacerolazos attended by men, woman and children--no incident was ever reported, even if insults against CFK went way over R level.
The CFK government let the media throw dozen of stories around with many false claims without doing anything against them.
Macri has already sent anti riot police and hydrants spray a demonstration of...retired people.
Which is normal. No government could implement the measures Macri is implementing without intimidation and coercion.
