Early polls following the first of three presidential debates point to Hillary Clinton coming out ahead of Donald Trump in Monday night’s face off. According to a CNN/ORC poll taken immediately after the debate wrapped, 62% of 521 registered voters who watched the debate said Clinton won, compared to 27% for Trump. Pulbic Policy Polling also had Clinton trumping Trump, but by a more narrow margin of 51% to 40%. Read full article

Perhaps DT should have asked Hillary about her 2010 Buenos Aires visit?

Secretary Clinton on Falklands during press conference with Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, Buenos Aires 2010 : 'As to the first point, we want very much to encourage both countries to sit down. Now, we cannot make either one do so, but we think it is the right way to proceed. So we will be saying this publicly, as I have been, and we will continue to encourage exactly the kind of discussion across the table that needs to take place .'
Now if she'd been well-briefed or done some independent research (she must employ staff to help her out) Hillary wouldn't have fallen for that usurpation (seriously half the world was usurped in the 19th century) and those numerous resolutions that are just proposals from the UN Decolonisation Committee, a committee made up of member states like Russia, China, Cuba, Venezuela, Iran and Syria. Hm. Should have done better...

As I keep saying, as I said about Brexit (when everybody thought remain had it) IT'S THE VOTE THAT MATTERS!

There are many gullible voters out there. The one who can lie with a straighter face gets their votes.

Pitiful Trump revealed what he really is: a sad character lacking any of the qualities required for a position of political responsibility.
    RIP Trump.

@6 Yes, he can only bark sound bites and insults but given a serious question he dissolves into rambling contradictory nonsense. Someone on his team should tell him that self-praise is no praise.

Trump was O.K. for about 20 minutes before showing he is hopelessly unprepared for the role of Leader of the Free World. He just isn't up to it. Loved the phrase 'Trumped up, trickle down” from Hillary and Trump boasting that not paying taxes made him smart. What a fool he is.

He overwhelmingly lost the first debate but it is a long time in politics to voting day.

Does anybody know what percentage of the US electorate actually watched this?

@9 I am not sure those figures are in yet. It was estimated that over 70% of registered voters would watch and 50% of those hadn't made up their minds who to vote for.

I think over 100 million watched but I assume that includes people like me who got up at 3:00 a.m. local time to watched it.

    This from THE HILL:
“More than 80 million people viewed Monday's presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, making it the most watched debate ever, according to Nielsen research.
The previous record was the only debate between Republican Ronald Reagan and President Jimmy Carter in 1980, which drew 80 million in an era with far few channels and no internet. In 2012, the first debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney in 2012 drew 67 million viewers.
The 80 million number doesn't include numerous streaming options made available.
The population of the United States is also much bigger than it was in 1980, which puts the Reagan-Carter debate in a different context.
In 1980, the population was 225 million, while today's U.S. population is 320 million.
Some analysts were expecting as many as 100 million viewers to tune in for the Clinton-Trump showdown. The debate drew fewer viewers than the Super Bowl, which in recent years has attracted more than 100 million viewers.”

So the yanks prefer the Super Bowl! No surprise there then.

Clinton's problem is that she is required to debate a complete idiot. I was happy to see that the 'Real Donald' appeared on stage last night.

@12 Yes, one commentator described it as watching a law professor debate with an angry five-year-old boy.

Trump supporters will be unwavering in their support and will be hoping Trump gets nastier - it is all he has. Clinton supporters will want her to continue to bait Trump as he seems unable to resist biting every time. But really none of that matters because it is the current undecided voters that will determine this election result. After the first debate they overwhelmingly were in favour of Clinton but that could all change.

There are an awful lot of voters that do not care for either candidate. Interestingly a lot of traditional Republican voters are saying they just cannot vote in an ignoramus like Trump. I see Democrats that dislike Clinton but would still vote her in - they don't like her but trust her ability to run the country over Trump. So, I think it is going to get more interesting as we approach election day.

From THE HILL (today) ”Clinton feels the pressure (article)“....
”Despite all those advantages, Clinton finds herself in an excruciatingly tight race.
As recently as Aug. 27, she had a more than 6-point lead over Trump in the RealClearPolitics national average of polls after a strong stretch following the Democratic National Convention.
On Tuesday, her lead was 2.4 percentage points in RealClearPolitics national advantage.
Polls have shown Trump ahead in the swing states of Florida and Ohio, and he has at least a fighting chance in all of the other battlegrounds, from purple states such as Nevada and Virginia to Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, two states a Republican hasn’t won in decades.”

    IT'S THE VOTE THAT COUNTS!

I remember thinking about Reagan, nah they will never elect that cardboard cut-out, worked by strings.

    Ops.

Has anyone told Trump, how many Mexican labourers he is going to have to employ, to build his wall?

@16 Yeah but Reagan came across as an amiable old fart even if his politics were pretty extreme; and his views. Trump is ignorant and not as smart as he tells everyone he is. We all know that if you have to tell people you are smart/successful/rich/powerful, you are not.

@15 He probably appeals to the nut jobs that would assassinate a candidate.

    @17 Elaine
“@16 Yeah but Reagan came across as an amiable old fart even if his politics were pretty extreme; and his views.”

Pretty brash statement. Sure Reagan was a “cowboy” to many, but he proved his political acumen while Governor of California. After the Carter marasmus, he restored the US to prosperity, while giving it back its pride.

Nothing to do with the above, but an interesting comparison, taking into consideration the due proportions : one can draw a parallel between Clinton and Lula ; while Clinton inherited a fairly good and stable economy from Reagan and Bush Senior, Lula inherited a similar legacy from FHC.....the similarities end there. While Clinton at least had the brains to not go off at a tangent and try to reinvent the wheel, Lula already at the end of his 1st term, started trying to implement his Bolivarian dream, and we all know how that ended. Brazil in the crapper, and hopefully, Lula in prison...with all his horde of corrupt friends and cronies.

The more Trump discovers about the benefits [economic / commercial - for his own self] of being in politics; the more he will be determined to “stick around” - either as the president or as an opposition.

Either way; he will not be able to contribute towards the “Balancing of the Budget”. His policies are neither practical nor sustainable. Pl. analyze yourselves.
