The people running the EU have yet to understand that their dream of a European super-state is dead, and that if they don't reduce their tyrannical control over the internal policies of member states, it will all collapse in the next few years. Promotion of trade is good -- trying to create a West-European version of the USSR is not. The peoples of Europe (at least those who can see what's happening) will not tolerate the destruction of their national sovereignty and cultures.
