Greece's ambassador to Brazil, Kyriakos Amiridis, was assassinated in a suburb of Rio de Janeiro, apparently in a “crime of passion” planned by his wife - of Brazilian origin - and her lover, a military policeman who is suspected of having actually committed the murder, police said this Friday. How do you arrange a 'Crime of passion'?. By deffinition a crime of passion is an unplanned, unforeseen, impulsive act due to a highly elevated emotional state of the perpatrator.

At least that's how I always understood the phrase.

You're right, but the reason stems from the Police Inspector in charge of the case, describing it as a 'crime passional'....although officers in his position require a degree in Law, they are usually pretty crude types...who don't necessarily know much about the Law, or even how to speak their own language correctly.
