While I can understand the feelings of the author, and the personal attachment for any veteran for his particular ship or unit or regiment, equal importance could have been- or still be assigned to preserving icons of the Conflict.
I have the same for those ships I served on...However, only one ship-HMS Victory - has the right of Portsmouth, and also supersedes all RN ships who have served above and beyond the call of duty. The List is Long, and the Hermes is high on it, but not above all those that served.
It;s a sad fact, but others, no doubt, will follow, but none for preferential preservation-unless on a par with Nelson's.

    Best wishes...

I dunno @Room101. There is HMS Warrior 1860 and the venerable Mary Rose in Pompey dockyard as well and HMS Alliance tucked away in Gosport. I don't think that HMS Hermes would look out of place at all.

    @ Hugh
and HMS Expunger, HMS President, HMS Stickleback, HMS Belfast, HMS Bronington, HMS Caroline, HMS Cavalier, HMS Courageous, HMS Gannet, HMS Holland 1, HMS Medusa, HMS Ocelot, HMS Trincomalee, HMS Unicorn, HMY Britannia, HMS M33, HMS X24 and HMS LCT7074...

All military museum ships in the UK, but the problem with Hermes is she'd take a hell of a lot of storage space to hold her.

Hugh I get your point about those vessels you mention, but the Victory is still a commisioned ship where the others are not
