It will not be possible for Britain to enjoy all the benefits of the single market or frictionless trade with its former EU partners after Brexit, the European Commission’s chief negotiator has warned. Michel Barnier told an EU committee in Brussels that there will be “negative” consequences to Brexit, which result from the UK’s decision to vote Leave in last year’s referendum and not from any attempt by the EU to “punish” the UK. Disclaimer & comment rulesAll we seem to get from Europe is veiled threats, they act like jilted lovers in the most childlike fashion. The British and most Europeans are not at all like minded.
Jul 10th, 2017 - 04:25 pm - Link - Report abuse 0What doesn't seem to occur to them is that they will now treat us in the same way they treat other countries outside their cosy little cartel which shows in graphic detail that they are not interested in fair and free trade or friendly relations.
Glad we are getting out of it.
What is he threatening exactly?
Jul 10th, 2017 - 06:09 pm - Link - Report abuse 0And if you think the EU treats countries outside it so badly, why exactly would you want to be one of them? Do you think it's more noble to suffer rather than remain part of the 'cosy cartel'?
We won't suffer, we will thrive. The EU is a scerotic inward looking disparate trading bloc, a load of rats in a sack that will ultimately fail.
Jul 10th, 2017 - 10:10 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Wanna bet? The EU has its problems but I think it will have a new trade deal arranged with a third party before we do.
Jul 10th, 2017 - 10:43 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Also you forgot to tell me what he is threatening Britain with.
The EU still thinks that it can threaten the UK with impunity. They seem to be forgetting history.
Jul 11th, 2017 - 06:49 am - Link - Report abuse 0Apparently The Voice does not want to bet. Too worried about losing?

Maybe you can answer since The Voice couldn't. What terrible thing is the EU threatening to do to the UK?
The are threatening trade sanctions etc etc and they want a massive divorce settlement to shore up their financial gaps for the next decade or so.
Jul 11th, 2017 - 12:37 pm - Link - Report abuse 0They are not threatening trade sanctions. WTO rules for trading are the default ones for all countries, and they are what we will return to if we leave the EU without any agreement. They are not obliged to make a trade deal with any non-EU country if they don't like the terms they are offered.
Jul 11th, 2017 - 01:07 pm - Link - Report abuse 0As for the divorce settlement, no doubt we own something for pensions and projects already agreed, but it's for the politicians to argue over precisely what is covered.
We will only have to pay for the pensions of our own former MEPs. The EU seems to think that it can land grab the assets the government owns in the EU. I wonder if that s that an indication that it may make it difficult for British citizens to own property within the EU?
Jul 12th, 2017 - 11:18 am - Link - Report abuse 0We will also have to continue funding long term projects that we previously agreed to. And a hell of a lot more Brits work for the EU than just MEPs - don't forget it's a bloated bureaucracy. I imagine they were promised pensions too.
Jul 13th, 2017 - 12:05 am - Link - Report abuse 0I believe there is an EU rule that foreigners must be allowed to own property, but that doesn't mean all the countries properly enforce it. I can't imagine they will try to grab private assets though.
The question is why is this piece appearing in Mercopenguin, a British government propaganda organ supposedly devoted to America, South America and the South Atlantic?
