Five of those killed after a terrorist plowed a truck through a Manhattan bike path in New York were Argentine high school pals celebrating three decades of friendship. The Argentine government identified the slain victims as Hernán Mendoza, Diego Angelini, Alejandro Pagnucco, Ariel Erlij and Hernan Ferruchi. Read full article

Nov 01st, 2017 - 11:48 am - Link - Report abuse 0US House of Representatives minority leader Pelosi today gave testimony that attacks such as the recent bicycle path massacre in Manhattan are clearly the result of easy availability of large-capacity motor vehicles. According to Pelosi, Anyone can just walk in and rent one of these death machines. There are no waiting periods, no controls.
Anyone can just walk in and rent one of these death machines. There are no waiting periods, no controls.”
Nov 01st, 2017 - 12:48 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Meanwhile back in the real world, in the USA you need a licence to rent a vehicle, which can be taken away if you drive one recklessly or are dangerously incompetent, or for medical reasons. But anyone can buy guns.
When a white American slaughters 58 people and injures 546, the White House says this is not the time for political debate, and it is premature to discuss policy when we don’t know all of the facts.”
When a Muslim immigrant murders 8 people and injures a dozen, Trump tweets immediately to say he's ordered increased 'extreme vetting', despite the fact the killer was not from any of the countries on his Muslim ban list.
Daemon: But anyone can buy guns.
Nov 01st, 2017 - 01:19 pm - Link - Report abuse -1Check your ignorance at the door, Tree. And to think that wikipedia isn't yet banned in your country:
The gun laws of California are some of the most restrictive in the United States. A 5-year Firearm Safety Certificate, obtained by paying a $25 fee, submission of applicant data to the state, and passing a written test proctored by a DOJ Certified Instructor, is required for the sale, delivery, loan, or transfer of any firearm. Handguns sold by dealers must be California legal by being listed on the state's Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale. This....has become progressively more stringent over time and is currently the subject of a federal civil rights lawsuit on the basis that it is a de facto ban on new handgun models.Private sales of firearms must be done through a licensed dealer. All firearm sales are recorded by the state, and have a ten-day waiting period.
Or NY:
”The purchase of a handgun in New York is limited to only those individuals who hold a valid pistol permit issued by a county or major city within New York, and present to the seller a purchase document issued by the licensing authority, with the specific make, model, caliber, and serial number of the handgun indicated on the document. The possession of a handgun in New York is limited only to those individuals who hold a valid pistol license and are in possession of a registered handgun (one that appears on the license, indicating the specific make, model, caliber, and serial number of the handgun). The carry of a handgun in New York is limited only to those individuals who hold a valid pistol license, possess a registered handgun, and are carrying said handgun in compliance with the restrictions as they appear on the license and other applicable state and federal law.New York State Pistol Permits are not issued to out-of-state residents.”
So much easier to just rent a large vehicle and mow down a few dozen people.
Now why did you list California laws when I mentioned a shooting in Las Vegas, Marti? Perhaps because:
Nov 01st, 2017 - 02:22 pm - Link - Report abuse +1Nevada law does not require firearms owners to have licenses or register their weapons, nor does it limit the number of firearms an individual posses. Automatic assault weapons and machine guns are also legal in the state as long as they are registered and possessed in adherence to federal law, according to the National Rifle Association.
Nevada does not prohibit the transfer or possession of assault weapons, 50-caliber rifles or large-capacity ammunition magazines. Local law enforcement issues concealed handgun licenses. Open carry is legal without a permit.
In contrast, Nevada residents who own a vehicle ARE required to have a licence and to register their vehicles. It's easier there to buy a gun if you want to kill lots of people. And also easy to buy several semi-automatic weapons and bump stocks plus large magazines if you really want to up your kill count.

Nov 01st, 2017 - 02:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0That's New York...they just cross the state line into PA and buy one...
Hell... I've seen guns for sale at a Yard Sale...
...and those house auctions when all the contents are sold...one can walk away with an armoury...
Clear ignorance of the actual laws that apply in those states. As in so many other easily researched matters.
Nov 01st, 2017 - 05:17 pm - Link - Report abuse +3Meanwhile, using large vehicles for mass killings seems to be on the rise.

Nov 01st, 2017 - 05:38 pm - Link - Report abuse +1How can he pretend that people who want to restrict gun ownership are hypocritical when there are already more restrictions on owning a vehicle than owning a deadly weapon?
Can a NY resident lawfully purchase and transfer a firearm in Pennsylvania?
Nov 01st, 2017 - 07:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0No, not unless he goes through the required process that involves a registered transfer through a Federally licensed dealer within NY, who then must conduct the mandatory background check. If the purchaser fails the background check, .......he can go to Home Depot to rent a pickup truck....
As the US fleet discovered there is no answer to Kamikaze. If they have the motivation or the mind sickness any everyday object or machine can become a deadly weapon.
Nov 02nd, 2017 - 04:11 pm - Link - Report abuse +2Only drastic measures far outside of westerners comfort zone can reduce this slaughter.
There certainly were and are ways of dealing with kami-kazes [presumably you refer to the US experience during WWII]. But when confronted with evolving threats it's not surprising that countermeasures are imperfect. Even so, according to the studies I've seen, fewer than 15 percent of the kami-kazes actually hit their ship targets. We have no idea of the ratio of today's attempted jihadist hits to actual known events.
Nov 02nd, 2017 - 06:21 pm - Link - Report abuse +3Not sure the WWII experience necessarily relates to the current situation. The Uzbeki didn't take his suicide very effectively.
This attack illustrates why the rights of Americans to keep and bear arms should never be infringed.
Nov 03rd, 2017 - 02:35 am - Link - Report abuse -4What a dumb cluck Hepatia is! This madman had mown down loads of people and got out of his vehicle before he got shot by a policeman.
Nov 03rd, 2017 - 04:57 pm - Link - Report abuse +4How would the bearing arms have stopped that? It didnt!
The US has failed to control the ownership of guns which is precisely why so many die unnecessarily Do these idiots think life is a Rambo movie, the Hepatia fool apparently does?
Has there been a single mass shooting or terrorist attack that was ended by a member of the public with a gun? All the ones I can think of were either shot by the police or the attackers killed themselves.
Nov 03rd, 2017 - 06:23 pm - Link - Report abuse +2Anyone who gets out a gun and starts shooting in this situation is likely to be mistaken for an attacker and shot by the police, and is probably just as likely to kill some random bystander as the criminal in all the confusion.
Sample from 60 seconds of googling = Volunteer church security guard in Colorado USA
Nov 03rd, 2017 - 10:18 pm - Link - Report abuse 0On December 9, 2007, Matthew Murray, age 24, opened fire in the New Life Church, striking five people and killing two, sisters Rachel and Stephanie Works; their father David Works was one of the individuals injured. Jeanne Assam, a church security volunteer, shot and wounded the gunman who then killed himself. Several hours prior, the same gunman opened fire at a Youth With A Mission training center in Arvada, Colorado, striking four people and killing two.

....Anyone who gets out a gun and starts shooting in this situation is likely to be mistaken for an attacker and shot by the police, and is probably just as likely to kill some random bystander as the criminal in all the confusion.... opines the Tree.
More googling... armed citizen-doctor - Dr. Lee Silverman emptied his gun's chamber, striking patient Richard Plotts several times, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan said. Plotts by then had shot the caseworker in the face and fired several shots at Silverman, including one that grazed his temple and another that struck his thumb, he said.... If the doctor did not have a firearm, (and) the doctor did not utilize the firearm, he'd be dead today, and I believe that other people in that facility would also be dead,”

Just have to look. Google is your friend.
The first one certainly counts, although I see the guy with a gun was a security volunteer.
Nov 03rd, 2017 - 10:59 pm - Link - Report abuse +1The second one is different as I gather the doctor was alone in the room with the psychiatric patient and the caseworker he killed. In that case there's little risk of him hitting bystanders or being mistaken for the aggressor by the police.
It's also very unfortunate that someone who had obvious mental health issues had such easy access to weapons, and was able to bring one into a hospital, but no doubt Hepatia wouldn't want to infringe the right of crazy people to keep and bear arms.

Very sad. :-(
Another day, another mass shooting in America. Apparently someone tried firing back at the attacker this time, but he still killed at least 26 people.
Nov 06th, 2017 - 12:32 am - Link - Report abuse 0No doubt if guns were harder to get hold of people would still use knives and vehicles to carry out mass murder, but those methods tend to leave a lot fewer victims.
At this rate, by justifying the unhindered arms sales, a day may come when such mass murderers - the extremists, loonies & terrorists - may even be AWARDED for controlling population!
