    The Germans are going to find that they and possibly France will have to cough up extra money to keep the other nations afloat.

    What nonsense. The German government may care about EU funding but German business leaders don't. What they care about is making money and how much lower their exports to the UK are likely to be after Brexit. That is their real motivation.

    And even though they're going to fleece us as we go through the door, they haven't got a new member to replace the UK as one of the providers. Still Spain are the 4th largest economy in Europe apparently, so they'll have to take up the slack.

    What does this mean? “Competiveness” for what and with whom?

    “With Britain, the EU is losing its most important ally in the fight for competitiveness.”

    @bushpilot
    It's all about politics. There's a lot of tension in the EU between countries that want more government intervention in the economy, lead by France, and those that support a more free market approach, lead by Germany. Britain is usually a strong supporter of the free market approach, which these businessmen want and claim leads to greater competitiveness in the economy.

    With our departure, France will be able to get their way more often, which is why they are taking a harder line in the Brexit talks. Germany, on the other hand, really wish we would stay as they are losing an ally in some ways.

    The question is why is this piece appearing in Mercopenguin, a British government propaganda organ supposedly devoted to America, South America and the “South Atlantic”?
