On his first full day in Chile on Tuesday Pope Francis immediately confronted the issue of sex abuse by the country's Catholic clergy, apologized and said he felt ashamed -- just hours after several Chilean churches were reportedly firebombed. Read full article

    It is no doubt a good thing that Chileans insist that the Catholic Church goes beyond token measures and fully confronts its demons. While united by a religious belief, the institution is nonetheless made up of human beings who carry their own flaws, including deviated sexual inclinations. The time may have also come for a revision of priests and nuns celibacy rule, which never made much sense but appears decidedly counterproductive today.
