UN chief Guterres criticized for accepting Syria in Decolonization Committee top post

UN chief Antonio Guterres was criticized on Thursday by a watchdog group for failing to condemn Syria’s election to a committee charged with working towards decolonization. UN Watch called on US Ambassador Nikki Haley, and European ambassadors to condemn the world body for handing Bashar Assad’s regime what it called “a propaganda victory.” Read full article

    Many of the countries of the committee have questionable track records on human rights and 21 of the 29 countries in the committee have been ranked as being ‘not free’ or ‘partly free’ by the 2014 ‘Freedom in the World’ Survey.
