The recent statement entitled ‘Progress made towards establishing a second commercial Falkland Islands air link’ released by the Falkland Islands Government has met with a mixed reception in the Islands. While some have expressed favor others have reservations and questions. Read full article

Disclaimer & comment rulesI'm afraid that the Argentinians, to some extent, believe that the Islanders are an 'implanted population' and somehow lack rights.
Feb 28th, 2018 - 10:36 am - Link - Report abuse +6Argentine Foreign Minister Malcorra said that historically the Argentine position was not to acknowledge for this case in particular the “self determination of peoples”, because 'kelpers' (Falkland Islanders) are a transplanted population, not aborigine (MercoPress 10 Nov 2016)..
Is that correct?

And you wonder why people think that you are the turnip.
Having tried empanadas from Chile and from Argentina and also genuine Cornish pasties there is not a lot of difference between them. Best of all are the pastes from Pachuca in the Mexican state of Hidalgo - these are basically Cornish pasties, Pachuca is a mining city and is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Hidalgo. It is located in the south-central part of the state and many Cornish miners emigrated here in the 19th century.

Feb 28th, 2018 - 08:28 pm - Link - Report abuse +1I couldn't post earlier because the website was down, but this isn't exactly surprising, it was a very short time to the deadline. Why didn't they just give them 90 days in the first place?
I seriously doubt anyone will agree to an Argentine company running the flights, and as for Aerolíneas Argentinas doing it, I don't know why anyone even bothered evaluating the idea. Even if it wasn't 100% unacceptable to the Falklanders, I can just imagine how delighted the Argentine taxpayers would be to subsidise flights for the Islanders.

Wouldn't you rather wait 90 days? I'm sure I remember someone saying the time allowed for submissions was way too short and the bureaucracy is very bureaucratic in Latin America.

Mar 01st, 2018 - 11:49 am - Link - Report abuse 0Penguin News is a weekly and Mercopress commonly recycles stories from Clarín. Perhaps they need to make a similar agreement with infobae?
Anyway, Comodoro Rivadavia is obviously a non-starter, but we'll see if there is any more interest after 90 days. If there is no other economic route then they will continue with the current weekly flight. No one could trust Argentina enough to allow a flight from there, or to use one of your airlines.
As for the FCO, this is what the FIG asked them to arrange, and apart from sharing info on fish stocks again it's the easiest to negotiate as Argentina gets something in return. If some of the Islanders don't like the idea they need to take it up with their own elected representatives who were pushing for it.
Twinkle, hows it going.? How are those undergarments holding up..

Thank you to Mr Lorton for reminding me that Twinkie is an ex-pat liar. There was a time when he posted marginally intelligent comments. Those days are long gone. He is now displaying all the symptoms of a stroke coupled with senile dementia.Since he was an ignorant animal when first encountered, his deterioration has not improved matters. Think is inclined to believe Argie news-outlets but then attempts to make fun of us relying on our own reports. Only the Argie news says that there were deadlines. Until our side says something similar it remains unconfirmed.
Mar 01st, 2018 - 01:02 pm - Link - Report abuse +4The FIG have the final decision on who, if anyone, gets the job. They have to approve the airline, offer the necessary guarantees and consent to the flight plans.

Mar 03rd, 2018 - 02:36 pm - Link - Report abuse +3Your proposed wager clearly reflects your faith in the odds. Obviously a direct flight is odds-on favourite in your eyes and a non-direct flight is a verrrry looonnngggg shot.
I can’t recall precisely what I said way back in 2016 but no doubt some sad old git (there’s a good boy Think) will re-post it for me. It’s true, at one stage I thought Brazil was a good option for us but I’m not sure about that now. The key element is a direct flight though, and I reckon we will get that.

Mar 03rd, 2018 - 02:47 pm - Link - Report abuse +3Update on establishing a second commercial Falkland Islands air link
Today marks the start of the formal commercial process for establishing a new weekly scheduled air service to and from the Falkland Islands. On 16 February, airline operators across Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay were invited to communicate their interest in providing this service via Aviation Economics, a specialist consultancy which has been appointed to manage the process.
Speaking of the response to date, Joanna Hunt, Director of Aviation for Aviation Economics said: “We are delighted to have received such a high level of interest from a wide range of operators. We have now initiated the commercial process and have written to these operators to invite them to take part in the formal procurement process.”
Aviation Economics is a global leader in strategic intelligence for the airline industry and has worked with a wide range of aviation businesses, including government agencies, in every continent of the world. It aims to manage the commercial process of establishing a second weekly commercial Falkland Islands air link, which is due to become operational in October 2018.This will include a monthly stop in Argentina, once in each direction, and will complement the existing weekly LATAM flight to and from Chile.
All queries concerning the commercial exercise will be managed by Aviation Economics.
