The leaders of France, Germany, the US and UK say there is “no plausible alternative explanation” to Russia having been behind the nerve agent attack in the UK. They condemned the “first offensive use of a nerve agent in Europe since the Second World War”, calling it an assault on UK sovereignty. Read full article

He should need a hell of a lot of convincing since it's not true. The fact that a damn lot of Scots don't think independence is a good idea is THE reason why the referendum didn't pass.

All Russia says is that they didn't do it and know nothing about it- but they don't provide reasons why they don't know anything about it. Any accused would provide evidence of how they lost control of a prohibited weapon or substance that (a) they shouldn't have had anyway and (b) would help to investigate in their own interests, regardless of accusations, and certainly wouldn't compound the situation.

    1. You're right, he's not dead (yet).
    2. Does the Russian government see it that way? Or did they decide he got off too lightly once they had their own guys handed over?
    3. Probably. He definitely did fuck the Russian state though, and not even out of conviction, but for money.

“I don't THINK it would have been particularly difficult for some less humble fkucked up Russky spies to buy a stash of very small glass vials containing some nasty fkucked up greyish or yellowish pulver....”

What, like, just in case they wanted to kill someone in a difficult, dangerous, and showy way 25 years later? And then kept it all this time before using it on Skipal? I wonder how long the precursors stay in a usable state, that's something the analysts would know.

There are much easier ways to kill someone that won't make a big splash. The publicity makes sense if it's supposed to be a warning to prospective traitors, not so much if it was private revenge.

You're the one who still believes in good guys and bad guys.

She's complaining about the whole thing, but that's not a surprise. Boris is being Boris and I'm still wondering what the bloody hell May was thinking.

Other than that she thinks there will be more sanctions, which there was been no sign of so far. I daresay she thinks the current sanctions for invading a neighbouring country are ever so unfair too.

And then she complains that we don't have answers on the deaths of Litvinenko, Berezovsky, and Perepilichny! I wonder why *that* might be?

Then there is something about a terrorist attack they prevented, which must have been badly translated because it made no sense. If you know what she is talking about there I'd appreciate a clue.

But most of all, I still want to know what the benefit to the UK or US is supposed to be from all of this. All I've heard are implausible conspiracy theories.

If the hypothesis is correct then the Russian nerve agent came directly over from Russia with the luggage and therefore it would be quite right to demand an explanation from Russia how this was possible...
If it was a Syrian nerve agent and the people concerned were ex-Syrian spies and the flight came directly from Syria and Syria had a past history of doing this sort of thing....would you be surprised if the UK pointed the finger at Syria....?

All the descriptions say the nerve agent is fast acting, so if someone wanted to use the daughter to unwittingly(?) deliver the poison to her father, it would really need to be in something like a gift that wouldn't be opened until she gave it to him. In which case, would there even be any traces detectable in her suitcase?

If they know more than they're telling us it's probably something they learned from spies, which they wouldn't want to reveal.

Even though I think that post at the dailystar is just yellow press BS, I agree with you that Moscow didn't order the attack on Skripal. Same pattern as that of accusing Cristina over Nisman death (which I never bought). May would serve her country better if she directed all investigation efforts to search for a “Stiusso” type of guy.

But how did the Mafia get their hands on a rare nerve agent? This isn't the sort of thing you can make in your kitchen. How did they get their hands on a sample of Polonium, for that matter, or do you think Litvinenko's death was different?

I've seen articles suggesting that at least some of the killings were due to Russian Mafia, but that they basically had the permission of the Russian government to do it. Because otherwise the Mafia be in trouble themselves.

    Mar 18th, 2018 - 12:46 am - Link - Report abuse 0
  • Tarquin Fin

Permission? Yeah, it is no secret that governments resort to thugs to knock somebody off (dirty deeds done dirt cheap!)

However, did the perps really had to use that “rare nerve agent” that is so obvious to trace? They could've got to Skripal in 1001 different ways. Elementary, this thing has a signature and we'll never know who the intended recipient of the message was.

Would Putin willingly bring this shitstorm on himself amidst this increasing rarefaction of the geopolitical realm? I don't thing so (even if the IPA is giving me a hell of buzz ...)

Either the ruskies have become really stupid at hiring assassins (which I highly doubt) or there is indeed someone else (or group) counting on the obvious reaction of western leaders.

    Mar 18th, 2018 - 01:06 am - Link - Report abuse +1
  • DemonTree

Would he have known it would be such a shitstorm though? Polonium is also a showy and difficult to acquire murder weapon, but nothing much happened after Litvinenko's death. Putin may have counted on the fact it's difficult/impossible to prove where the agent was actually manufactured to give him plausible deniability and prevent any action being taken against Russia, but then the UK government decided to come out guns blazing anyway.

It's not conclusive but I still haven't seen a better suggestion for who, how and why.

(I just tried putting snow in my drink. Not as good as ice but still fun. Do you think I'm too old to go sledging tomorrow?)

I'm just drawing a parallel on Cristina - Nisman thing. The least thing she needed in 2015 was to be linked to a murder. Are you suggesting that she relied on this reasoning alone to order Nisman dead? Nope, it caused a landslide against her administration. The general public political response always follows Occam's razor trend.

Snow is cool ... Wish I had some of that instead of 35 celsius at 10 pm. All I know is that if I tried to go sledging right now, I'll be sliding on my own pool of perspiration! :P

Yeah, but Russians aren't gonna turn against Putin because of this. Either they won't believe it or they'll support the murder of a traitor. They don't care about Britain, they have plenty of propaganda of their own against us. Unless there are sanctions it's not a problem for Putin, we don't get a vote in the Russian elections.

“All I know is that if I tried to go sledging right now, I'll be sliding on my own pool of perspiration!”

You're right about that. Russians are very patriotic. However they've been through a lot since Glasnost and Perestroika. As of 2010 I had a work mate from Russia and he asserted that the soviets weren't gone but latent. Many in Russia that had been close to power during the soviets are still nostalgic of the good old days.

Plutonium is indeed a hard to come by thing for us ... mere peasants.

I'll ask Think if he's got a spare room to rent down there in Esquel. I'm determined to retire to a more forgiving environment heat wise. Cold I can handle.

Too bad. I suppose anything is better than the chaos and corruption they suffered after the collapse of the Soviet Union, but Putin, really... Russians are good at everything else - science, arts, sport - but they always seem to end up with awful governments.

    Think,

Of course I did my homework applying my #1 mantra: Numbers don't lie. However it is useless to just throw a bunch of numbers while screaming bloody hell!!

Numbers without context are nothing but a bunch of facts that give you no useful information at all. Not that I am questioning your numbers -they slightly differ from mine- but we should determine why have we arrived at those numbers.

All in all, what you stated less than two years ago made perfect sense. However I think that I reacted the way I did because I might have perceived that you were defending Cristina.

What I gather from “El Turco” -not my referent btw, I just enjoy his colorful narrative and precise insights- is that the peronist need to hurry to find a decent candidate for 2019 so they block any chance of Cristina returning. Is that what caught your attention too?

I agree with el Turco, we need someone better than Macri. Will it happen in 2019? Hardly unless there is a bank run or similar crisis (btw, have you read Cavallo's latest post?) 2023 is more likely it.

There's a nice explanation of the OPCW on the BBC today and what we know about chemical weapons.

“International experts are due in the UK, to test samples of the nerve agent used in the attempted murder of a spy and his daughter. How do they keep track of the world's most toxic chemicals?

”After collecting samples of the poisons used on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, a team from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will conduct tests, with results expected to take at least a fortnight.“

”Several months ago, Russia announced it had completed destruction of its nearly 40,000 tonnes of declared agents - the largest stockpile in the world. There is no dispute about this as the process was carried out under the watchful eyes of the OPCW's inspectors.“

”Although the Novichoks fall outside these controls, and no country has declared possession to the OPCW, their existence became known in the 1990s.

“It is quite likely that some government laboratories made minute quantities.

”Their characteristics would have been stored in databases, so that their identity could be confirmed at a later stage if found as an unknown poison in someone's blood.

“Whether this has happened in the UK's chemical defence laboratory is not known.”

The Russian propaganda machine is evidently far more effective on *some* people.

“A Russian official said on Wednesday that Moscow would not accept the results of an inquiry into the source of the poison being undertaken by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.”

Why might that be, I wonder?

“Johnson said he would be seeking urgent assurances from Russia that it would fulfil its obligations under the World Cup contract to ensure the safety of fans. “I think it is up to the Russians to give us an undertaking that they will be safe,” he said.”

Fat fucking chance. If this World Cup ends without any of our fans being murdered by Russian hooligans - encouraged rather than punished by their own government - I'll be pleasantly surprised.

The thing that makes it so plausible is all the previous assassinations of Russian dissidents, in different countries, reported in different media. I suppose all these foreign publications are also part of the 'Engrish Propaganda machine'?

And I hope they do 'crack down' on Russian oligarchs investing in London property. Houses are supposed to be places to live, not an investment. The money is totally not worth the painful side effects.

    3) They chose to exclude the downing of the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over the Ukraine...

Okay, so to summarise, you agree the Russian official exists, and did say the words quoted. And that whatever the OPCW investigation shows, Russia does not think it will be enough to determine what happened. In fact, it sounds like only their own investigation would be acceptable to them, which other countries are unlikely to trust for obvious reasons. Fair?

RE the video, I don't follow Russian conspiracy theories, so you'll have to tell me why this pilot was supposed to have shot down a civilian airliner according to Russia, and why all the investigations came to the conclusion it was shot down by a Buk surface-to-air missile instead. Were they nobbled by the 'Engrish Propaganda Machine'?

I suspect the airliner incident wasn't included because it wasn't done by Russia, but by the Ukrainian separatists they had armed, and was a mistake in any case, not part of this supposed 'pattern'.

I did a little more research. The line about Russia not recognising the results was reported by Associated Press, and they have a different quote from our favourite Russian offical:

“Vladimir Yermakov, deputy head of the Foreign Ministry's department for non-proliferation, was asked during a briefing whether Moscow would accept the results of the OPCW probe.

Yermakov said that ”unscrupulous efforts“ to investigate the attack without sharing the case files with Moscow ”is not going to work for us.“

Yermakov earlier said Russia is willing to cooperate with Britain as long as it shares all findings of the probe.”
