The media are falsely reporting that a “purchase” has been accomplished.

The French have insisted that a purchase involve the actual payment of the full amount agreed to, and Argentina, unsurprisingly, has not managed to come up with the tiny bit of money requested, being unfamiliar with the concept. All that has been done is an “agreement” to purchase, not unlike a number of similarly ephemeral, baseless, and ultimately abandoned agreements in the recent past.

Remember the similar signing of a purchase agreement several weeks ago, which came to naught due to characteristic Argentine non-payment: “Por falta de pago, Francia demora el envío de cinco aviones para la Armada”

Argentina is like that embarrassing in-law every family has. They keep talking loudly at parties and family gatherings about their latest investment ideas and plans to buy a bigger house, even in the presence of the head of the family who quietly sits there with the knowledge that he doesn’t have two sticks to rub together and still owes him £8,000 after the last debacle.
