Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro on Tuesday signed a decree that will temporarily make it easier for Brazilians to buy guns, despite fears the move could aggravate already staggering violent crime.

 The executive order, signed in a live television broadcast following a cabinet meeting, allows “good citizens” to more easily own firearms, said Bolsonaro, a former army captain.

“To guarantee the legitimate right of defense, as president I am using this weapon,” he said, indicating the pen he then used to sign the decree.

The far-right president ran on a law-and-order platform. His message resonated with voters in Brazil, which in 2017 had a record 64,000 murders, more than any other country.

Tuesday's decree makes it much easier for adults with no criminal record to buy guns and keep them at home. It does not extend to carrying weapons -- concealed or otherwise -- in public, which remains restricted to police, public or private security personnel, and the military. A ministerial source said the new decree took effect immediately, without needing congressional approval.

Bolsonaro has said he wants to overturn a 2003 law that was tantamount to banning civilians from purchasing guns. On the campaign trail he often mimicked a pistol by extending the thumb and forefinger with his hand.

According to a survey published last month by the Datafolha firm, 61% of Brazilians are opposed to generalized gun ownership.

    This is nothing but a storm in a coffee cup! There are so many Spiritual Leaders, Faith-Healers and the pastors [offering FREE miracles by the dozens, on a daily-basis] readily available; Brazil does not even NEED doctors:

    REF: “decree making it easier to purchase guns”:

    This is yet another typical stunt, a strategy, a political capital for keeping the ignorant masses to go on clapping for delivering an electoral [so called] promise [to make the uneducated believe - blindly - in the “trustworthiness” of the president].

    The BIGGEST joke is that those who clap, dance and burst crackers on account of this decree; most probably will never buy arms and to make it even funnier, they may not even be within the least financial conditions [may barely afford] to buy of the arms which are more expensive than the kitchen knives.

    Isn't this a Clear Example of: “The population gets the government which they deserve”?

    @EM

    REF: “Brazilians do not deserve what's going to happen to them”:

    You ARE right - nobody does.

    However, considering their apathy - contrary to active interest - towards trying to find or understand The Reality + demanding the fulfilment of Their Rights; clearly indicates a certain amount of mass-masochism - a non-assertive acceptance of their own suffering, the lack uniting against injustice, the lack of United Fighting Spirit. Hence, this a Clear Example of: “The population gets the government which they deserve”
