I don't often agree with Think but he has got a point - SURE (and the forerunner Cable & Wireless) certainly don't offer their internet or telecom services for free and that gouging is what Think was alluding to, so there is some truth in that remark.
***Who gets internet & telecom services for free?***..., you ask...
Welll..., I could start mentioning FINLAND..., where free internet access is considered a legal right...
I could continue with Lithuania and Croatia that have followed the Suomi example...
I could mention thousands of places all over the world that offer free Wi-Fi...(Including quite a few down here in Patagonia...;-)
The fact is that..., as Mr. RedBaron..., in his unmistakeable Malvinas Island Kelper understatement style..., so diplomatically puts it..., the price of an internet connection in Malvinas is..., to the best of my knowledge..., one of the highest on Planet Earth..., BY FAR...!
And... I will letDan Jørgensen..., one of the young Socialdemocratic politicians from Denmark..., answer that Anglo Turnips turnipidity above... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2DWvewVNLoI
%wise its not the uk. 750000 I Think. Whereas we have 1 million Poles from 40m. Constant night in winter, brass monkeys, flat and boring, alcoholic problems worse than Scotland... Eyecwatering prices and taxes
Rodge..., Rodge...
To compare we must first know...:
1) How many Gigabites does your broadband package includes...?
2) What is the download speed on your package...?
3) What is the Upload speed of your package...?
As you live in rural noaleland Siam..., I will assume that you pay £43 monthly for a package with...:
- Unlimited Gigabites...
~20 Mbps Download speed...
~ 5 Mbps Upload speed...
In comparison... in the British occupied Malvinas Islands..., them Kelpers pay for...
~ 45 Gigabites per month...
~ 5 Mbps Download speed...
~ 768 Kbps Upload speed...
.........................?................ the modest sum of .................. ~ £180 ................. monthly.............
(And that's just SURE's middle-priced package.....)
Can't actually recall what I do pay for - been a happy customer for years now. Just did a check, download is 16.21 mbps and upload is testing at 1.38 mbps so you may well be right. My internet package comes in at 1000 baht. The phone is separate and seems to be costing me on average 800 baht per month.
180 squid does sound excessive. No idea what a satellite internet system costs here now.
Still not sure (excuse the pun) that we are comparing like with like here Think. Satellite based internet systems are undoubtedly more expensive. So how does the Falklands compare with similar islands based systems elsewhere in the world?
£180, ouch. Why doesn't the government spend some of that surplus on improving connectivity?
@TV
The UK has 4.9m citizens living abroad, and Poland 4.4m. As a percentage of the current population, the UK has 8% living abroad, vs only 4% for Denmark and 3% for Sweden; no EU country has less than that. So despite the weather and the taxes, people are not fleeing Scandinavia.

Thunk, excelling himself yet again. Hardly surprising that the islanders will never opt to join the dicks next door.

Lol, owned. I love the fact that 'school's free, university's free' is a bad thing in her view. America is so fucked up and they think it's normal.
Jan 23rd, 2019 - 06:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I had to work on a project for our Australian team once, the lag was unbelievable. Probably mostly due to the distance, but still.
