They might then learn that England, at least, managed for 1,036 YEARS without european interference. Except for fighting europeans off. From the Danes, through the Spanish, the Dutch, the French and ending with the Germans. Although, if one counts conflicts elsewhere in the world, one can add the Belgians and the Portuguese. And made it through quite successfully.
