Construction work on the new Falklands College building near the Training Centre is well underway, with an anticipated launch date currently set for early in the New Year. Lawmaker MLA Stacy Bragger made the announcement as he provided a portfolio report to the Legislative Assembly.

MLA Bragger said this was a timely development as figures had shown that the number of students taking part in courses at the Training Centre over the last five years has risen several times over from 50 in the academic year 2014/15.

He explained that the reference section only of the library is to be closed and removed to a secure container until the new facilities are available in the college in order for half of the current library to be converted into a classroom.

This will mean the reference section will not be available from August 5, until December. The other part of the library, which includes the children’s section, fiction and DVD hire, will remain open until the new building is ready.

MLA Bragger said the plan is still for the library to be completed first in the new college, and the December deadline for this remains, adding, “this will allow the additional works to be completed for new classrooms at FICS over the school summer holidays. (PN)
