It was used to pull the rag from under Lula's feet as he was by far the most popular candidate vying for the election in which the miscreant ended up being elected president.
Various corruption accusations -- unproven up to this day -- were concocted by intelligence services, relayed by the media and then made official by willing judges and prosecutors against former president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner in order to undermine the Kirchnerist candidate Daniel Scioli at the 2015 election.
Similarly unproven accusations and rumours circulated before the coup that pushed to fled Bolivian president Evo Morales.
The sad end of those stories is, the same who cried wolf end up involved in, this time real, corruption scandals.
Those who dislodge others with dirty tactics continue using the same dirty tactics once in power.
