The severity of the outbreak in many nations has depended on how well — or poorly — rulers have responded to it. The best performers so far have included New Zealand, Taiwan, South Korea and Germany, which have succeeded in greatly reducing infections and deaths through testing, contact tracing and lockdowns.

As I've been in charge of meals lately, last night I grilled a nice bife de chorizo which tonight's dinner is the chilled leftover thinly sliced with tomato chutney. Going to the Toilet in Brazil
Ana Gabriela Verotti Farah, The Brazil Business, 17 May 2013
Where Do I Put my Toilet Paper? Bathroom Bins
Some people complain about it and say that, besides being weird, this practice is also unhygienic, because people's dirty papers stay there together for a long time instead of being flushed. But it is not that bad. Actually, it is very normal. Simply because we usually don't just throw the paper in the bin; we put a plastic bag inside this bin, and when it gets full – which is the equivalent to say 'constantly' –, it is changed for a new, empty and clear one.
Brazilians don't usually throw away their toilet papers in the own toilet not only because of the trash bins, but also because we are taught that toilets can clog with paper. Also, the sewage system can't cope with the amount of toilet paper that would go straight to the water if it wasn't for the trash bins inside the bathrooms.

The garden is still producing some wonderful heirloom tomatoes and the romaine lettuce is outstanding. The insulating of the melons has kept the remaining three still on the vine.
Today I've enjoyed buttered sourdough bread toast for breakfast, a smoked bacon, romaine lettuce and heirloom tomato sandwich again made with sourdough bread. Tonight's dinner this evening was a classic Cesar salad with large sourdough bread croutons (lightly fried in a garlic and herb olive oil) and a nice crisp Sauvignon Blanc I've recently detailed.
It is of Madame's opinion, sourdough bread has a far lower gluten content than commercial bread.
Like all independent members of the superior gender, her mood swings can be dramatic and I've learned to wisely to be patient and sympathetic. This lockdown has been a psychological challenge.
She's been making some very specialized pots for orchids that require special ventilation vents on the side. (Four of her creations are in the kiln this evening.)
I've become a habitual user of Microsoft Meeting video conferencing and have been organizing everything from my home. I can even get live feed from my UAVs as well as monitor all the farm webcams. It's such a surreal world we are experiencing now.
One thing that deeply concerns me is the economic impact on the poor. This lockdown has been a double edged sword.

Apr 18th, 2020 - 07:57 pm - Link - Report abuse 0“ The big question for the world now is when do we restart the economy?”
An interesting question. Drawing on my heritage.
My grandfather was a subsistence Crofter. It was my role to churn butter, feed hens and fetch water from the well.
We had sheep and a cow. The cow met all our needs from Crowdie to Cream.
My grandfather would travel to Stornoway once a year to sell wool.
Other than that - we ate what the land and sea could provide.
I think when this tragedy comes to an end. China will be vilified, and we will become less globalised.
I guess there will be a big reset button, where we start other and serial defaulters like Argentina can again walk away from their debts. Hey Ho
Although I made my life away from the Western Isles - it remains my home as does the Falklands for it’s wonderful people.
Madame prepared a wonderful le gigot d’agneau Pascal, which was originally planned for Pâques, and we'll be enjoying the leftovers for days. (Cold lamb sandwiches for tomorrow.) At the moment we're again enjoying a marvelous Viña Arboleda Carménère as the evening sets on what has been a beautiful day.
Apr 18th, 2020 - 10:45 pm - Link - Report abuse +2I had to look up Stornoway... I've always had a great affinity for the farmland of my family. My father's great-grandfather studied engineering in Edinburgh and migrated to Valparaiso to supervise steam-turbine repairs. One of his sons fell in love with my grandmother who emigrated with her family from Ayrshire. My mother's grandfather grew up in Aberdeenshire and literally jumped his ship in Valparaiso.
The word we use for a mongrel dog here is kiltro which best describes my mixed heritage, but also explains why many of our family studied at British schools. In the Allende land reform aftermath, my family was near bankruptcy and the Chilean naval school was offering full scholarships to fluent English applicants.
Later in life, I became closely involved in working with my counterparts in Mare Harbour and Mount Pleasant, but sadly I have never visited the islands.
I think we'll see worldwide repercussions against the Chinese and I agree with your assessments, but globalism will reman an important part of our life. It's important to allow for people to recover from looks like a severe economic recession/depression. (Le bête noire my partner refers as...)
Regarding the nasty reference by the merely a waste of pixels on our screens about Pinochet, I have always remained open and honest about my views of the 1973 coup d'état in my country and the very unfortunate aftermath. There are many in Chile and many throughout the world also share similar opinions:

As yesterday Madame prepared a Patagonian leg of lamb (another leg is still in the freezer), today's petit déjeuner was thinly sliced medium rare cold lamb sandwiches dressed with a roasted garlic mayonnaise, a touch of German mustard, romaine heart leaves and slices of a heirloom tomato with crusty sourdough bread. This was accompanied with freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and seltzer water.
The sandwiches were so damn good, I suggested we repeat the same for the evening but this time accompanied with a Carménère instead... of which I saw d'accord in my partner's eyes...
Life is good!
¡Salud!
