God, all these idiots protesting in Brazil and the US!

If your society can't survive a temporary shutdown then your society has some faults that your political system can't fix even when everything is going well. This poisonous American idea that the individual should be put above society has obviously spread within Brazil and will damage the country as much as it has damaged the US over the past several decades.

Relaxing restrictions will not lead to the economy bouncing back. Both the US and Brazil are in for a terrible recession because their federal governments believe that the market should control the prosperity of everyone. This doesn't work. Neoliberalism eats itself as it requires more and more laws and protections to operate “unencumbered”.

Thankfully some of us live in countries where we will start to live the lockdown soon, not because people have some idiot notion of liberty or patriotism but because we listened, sacrificed and conquered the problem as a societal whole and not a collection of selfish individuals that try to step over others.

Brazil (and the US) is in for 2 years of a rolling pandemic because they can't defeat a virus that doesn't care about politics. My life will be back to normal in about 2-3 months.... maybe sooner, while the imbeciles in this picture will have a disrupted life until there is a vaccine probably in late 2021.

So, so glad we don't have a president.... seems to attract a lot of idiots that no one can get rid of.

From the way that he's constantly coughing looks like his claims have come back to bite him. If this is correct given his age, he is in group that has only a fifty percent survival rate. Perhaps, that's a blessing.

Perhaps, it would be a blessing, if all people that contradicted Terry's politics would get Corona and not survive.

Terry has spent the last two years down in his basement developing the perfect utopian political system.

That being the case, I'm sure if everyone would just let Terry run the world, the place would be great!

There are those among Bolsonaro's followers that want to bring back the Military Junta. “Our Illustrious President” is strong on his support of this move. What he forgets is that anyone of the rank of Major and above do not follow the orders of a mere captain. They know that the captains should not be allowed out without a muzzle some other means of vocal control. Brains are only issued to officers at a much higher rank.

In this calm quiet period, over a third of Latin Americans have lost their livelihoods and financial reporting show negative growth GDP numbers projected for the second and third quarters. Scary to say the least...

    https://latam.pimco.com/en-lat/insights/economic-and-market-commentary/cyclical-outlook/regional-outlooks

Bolsonaro understands that the consequences from a pandemic economic repercussion is far more dangerous to the over 230 million Brazilians than the virus itself.

Meanwhile, another beautiful day here as ma jeune mariée awoke to find the final completed orchid pots survived the kiln and she prepared a Hachis Parmentier (sort of a French version of shepherd's pie) using the leftover lamb, vegetables from the garden and goat cheese.

I pulled out of the pantry our Lello Musso Lussino integrated freezer machine and made 1.5 liters of pomegranate gelato. (I was scolded a bit for not making a sorbet, but she approved of the result.)

It's a surreal world I'm experiencing as I'm teleconferencing my business affairs, while preparing gelato and listening to soft classical music. The smell of bread baking lingers in the air and ma mariée is busily glazing ceramics.

This is Hell, but we just don't recognize it yet...

“There are those among Bolsonaro's followers that want to bring back the Military Junta”.
Quite true, but they represent a very small minority of those who voted for Bolsonaro in 2018.....they are insignificant, in numbers.
In any case, today's military leaders, a completely different generation to those that took power in 64, are very clear where they stand (in terms of law & order), and support a functioning democracy.
I don't think they'll just sit by and watch the country drift towards either extreme.

Gollum has confused you for Skip....(twice....)
Not surprising really, the slimy creature has been doing this more 'n more of late....just a sign of his dementia, caused by years of solitary confinement in a dingy basement.

Another thing that is very funny, he claims he has no political agenda....if Lula and Bolsonaro did not exist, Gollum would have no reason to, either.
He also claims he has “an over riding interest in legal issues”.... that may be true, but it's unfortunate he understands very little about them...

As to his preferences, we all know them well....inflatable dolls - especially Long Dong Silver's - cross dressing, and a number of other wierd habits.

I'm glad to hear that you are taking it easy during the lock down. I'm trying to make the best of it but have lots of things that I simply miss. There's definitely a limit on what you can do living in an apt. It does have a nice balcony though, but I'm forbidden by law to cook anything with an open fire out there. Oh well, that's hell enough for me!

Now seriously, why do you think it'll be hell? Do you see the world slowly sliding into socialism because of the pandemic? I certainly feel that is what they want to accomplish over here.

I normally live like a gypsy, accustomed to constantly moving and now like yourself — in voluntary lockdown. It's also been a strange experience to share 24 hours a day with a normally explosive Catalan-Occitan-Chileana, that somehow has become unnervingly pleasant and calm through this strange ordeal.

Isolating ourselves from our extended family and friends has been difficult. Farming by teleconferencing has been successfully-bizarre, but the wholesale collapse of nearly the entire economy has me truly frightened. There is a large percentage of Latin America's populace losing their livelihoods , with another large percentage artificially being paid with a phantom economy. Banks are actually charging negative interest rates...

The export markets have nearly collapsed in several sectors, with petroleum futures actually trading at negative values...

As an export grower, I'm assured my sector will have a continuing market, but the overall collapse for commodity prices will destroy many agribusiness' markets.

It's easy to predict a 10% unemployment with will result in serious social unrest, but with 25% you will have revolution...

    ¡Salud!

I don't live in Canada. I am finding it almost juvenile that there are so many people using this pandemic to create fear of the future. For many people, there is no future, they will be dead.

What is the use of an economy if it doesn't serve everyone? What is the use of government if it doesn't help those that need it?

Left and right... such a facile, simplistic and literally one dimensional view of the world.

The idea that the is a choice between socialism and a free for all of liberty and economic freedom that simply shows a lack of imagination and intelligence.

If a government says that there is a choice between the two or if people think they can only fight for one or the other, then they are only short changing themselves of the best of both worlds.

If you have to build your prosperity and country on having a permanent underclass to prop up the rest because you say that this is the only way to give everyone freedom then you don't know what freedom means.

Large scale unemployment only leads to revolution when there is no escape and no hope. But when you have hope and competent government that governs for all and not just those that vote, or have money or have the uneducated mob behind them, then you don't have to worry about revolution.

With the economy stalled and millions unemployed in my country, I don't worry about idiots protesting for their deluded version of liberty. What they want is hope. So they are just scared and finally realising that their idea of government and society has taken a battering and have no one offering them a solution.

Bolsonaro and Trump don't offer solutions, they just offer excuses. They ignore or further entrenched problems in their societies when the times were good and now the results are coming back to haunt them.

We undertook the sacrifice and now that we have nearly beaten this pandemic are starting to ask what is next and how we can restart.... not go back to what was before!

“they were helping defend individual freedoms”

“Everyone in Brazil needs to understand that they are subject to the will of the people”

“Some of the protesters also called for a return to authoritarian measures used during Brazil's last military regime, known as AI-5.”

How ironic. They want to defend individual freedoms by banning them, and enforce the will of the people by ending free elections. Just turkeys protesting the suspension of Christmas.

“Bolsonaro supporters have been demanding that governor Joao Doria resign because he has been a staunch supporter of shelter-in-place measures.”

How fast the wheel turns. Doria supported Bolsonaro's election and now the “patriots” consider him a public enemy.

With all due respect to your obsevations, you need to factor that the test results in Latin America are woefully unreported and of far less accuracy. My Argentine brothers have an excellent and respected medical community, but not even the Argentines believe their current COVID19 statistics.

I completely understand your sentiments, but the people here are nervous and frightened as there really is no social safety net, like in developed countries to sustain the people.

I have the luxury to stay at home and maintain my employees, but many do not have that option. We will see massive bankruptcies even with government bailouts and the loss in wages has been brutal.

Like I said, we all are experiencing Hell right now, but just haven't realized it.

I'm glad that you are being able to carry out your farming remotely. Not so lucky over here. It's just amazing to see how the retail industry has so much impact overall. Since our current software clients are mostly retailers we've just been able to invoice as little as 20% of what we were expecting.
25% unemployment is just around the corner. Fortunately we've been able to pay our dev. team this month and we've already set aside some emergency financing for next month as well. And that'll be it I guess if activity does not pick up by June. It had never crossed my mind that 2019 would ultimately turn out as the worst year to found a startup.

Even if by June things start to move a bit, we still run the risk of hyperinflation exploding like it never did before.

Anyway, just keep on trying to lift up the spirits. Not quite I guess after all my rants.

    Salud! Prost! Cheers!

Hang on and weather the storm if you can. We've been offered a continued line of credit as the government here — is doing what most of the world is scrambling to accomplish by keeping our heads above the rising water. I would imagine the UK will have some advantageous programs to help your young company, especially payroll. The world economy is “just too big to fail”...

As you are in software, you might find the term: “farm remotely” an oxymoron but it's happening. We have for some time been able to monitor our farm irrigation systems remotely and obviously receive continuous remote climate reports, but during the installation of our automated aerial system — a technician demonstrated how we could merge all our data from multiple sources into a single platform, which we fortunately embraced and fully integrated. What seemed to be outrageously expensive has proved to be invaluable.

Obviously trained skilled people on the ground is our most important component, but the whole world is seeing a new perspective of working remotely. For example, Microsoft Meeting is commonly being used now here by everyone... Two months ago, I didn't know it even existed.

Retailers are harvesting data profiles and proactively targeting new customers. This morning a wine retailer offered me a discounted special offering with free delivery and my bank offered me up to a 60% discount on purchases from the same company. This was not due to serendipity, but instead of some brilliant software algorithms.

We live in “remarkable” times, which is a surreal Hell. All the economic wisdom of the London School of Economics and The Chicago School of Business are about as reliable as the price of petroleum.

As I saluted earlier, Salad For Everyone! ... Cheers!

I never thought of “farming remotely” as an oxymoron. This kind of technology has been evolving for at least 15 years and it's times like these that will accelerate its massive adoption.

I'll take your saluting literally, “Salad!” as all I've been gaining lately is weight!

It WOULD be ironic if their opinions represented the great majority. They don’t. The protest gathered a few hundred, and amongst those, “some” wanted the return of the AI-5. They are irrelevant, and that will not happen….as the military has made very clear.

Some of B’s fanatic supporters want Doria’s resignation….so what ? it’s absolutely ridiculous….simply won’t happen. No point in taking these few idiots seriously. They are just like Gollum, whom Chicureo refers to, now and again, as “Sméagol”.....Shmelly Shmeagal....

By now you've noticed that Bolsonaro can't resist the temptation to react, not always sensibly, when provoked.....while he made an appearance and cheered on some followers, it's not clear whether he supported the return of mechanisms such as the AI-5 etc....I don't think he does, and what he believes deep down, as long as it stays there, is irrelevant.

I think that one of the several Congressmen who allegedly supported the extremists, is Carlos Bolsonaro.... These guys are losing perspective, and should stick to what their mandates demand of them.

I believe the idiots had the right to shout whatever slogans they wanted, because isn't the right to freedom of expression foreseen in the Constitution ? the protest was in bad taste, no doubt, and not intelligent, nor helpful....on the other hand, even considering that freedom of speech may not be absolute, it still does not justify a (politically motivated) STF inquiry into it, unless they are looking into the misuse of public funds to promote it...

I just read some (more) crap from Gollum, i.e., ”When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser.” ― Socrates”

    Obviously, Socrates never met Gollum.

But funny, I was always under the impression that for a debate to be called a debate, it had to be serious, and to be productive....which presumes its participants are at least mediumly intelligent, and don't run away from it, resorting to cheap insults, and changing the subject, such as the (irrelevant) citation quoted by Gollum, to which he usually adds “game, set, match”, trying to imply that he, the self proclaimed judge, jury and executioner, has decided....and that's it.

He never provides proof of anything - because his claims cannot be proven - but demands it from everyone...it's his way of sneaking out the back door when he realizes he's screwed, but not before accusing you of slander......all you need to do is see how he addresses all other posters, and how he ends his rant, “what a lying bag if shite you really are”..
Easy to conclude, there IS no debating with Gollum, because his brain is smaller than a pea.

Now, why do you think that Gollum took offense to your comment “As two Karl Marx inspired useful idiots....” ? perhaps because the hat fits ?

“...How can you experience a better experience than the aroma of fresh brewed coffee, bread baking in the oven and faint perfume of a woman...”

All sounds very nice, and must smell even better...but none of them other are part of the Gollum experience...I believe his only contact with a woman at birth....later, when he started to develop a slimy skin - especially on his head after he lost all his hair - and resorted to crawling around on all fours, it was observed that direct sunlight hurt his eyes.....so after examining the slimy creature, the doctors prescribed that he should hide from humans, and preferably somewhere dark....So, the basement became home.
    The rest, we all know.

B is acting like he thinks he's a 'little king'....he isn't. He really pissed out the pot with Moro....hope he stops interfering with Guedes.

His obssession to protect his 3 stooges has become very obvious, and has made him lose perspective . He thinks he can interfere is areas he can't, and shouldn't... he hands out carte-blanche to people who know what they are doing, then removes it at the first disagreement....not good, just creates instability, economic and political.

The STF is looking into Flavio's corrupt practices while a Congressman in Rio, and the accusations against Carlos that he is the one behind all the fake news coming from an alleged fake news dept in the government....

I earlier replied to Massot's slander of my country and still waiting for a reply...

As our family farm relies upon seasonal manual labor, I'm very much aware of the current income inequality in my country and the real effects of governmental policy regarding the “going pay-scale” for the underprivileged unskilled workers situation.

Prior to the second administration of the Partido Socialista de Chile President Michelle Bachelet* 2014 to 2018 — the cost and availability of farm labor was a serious concern, because of demographics indicating serious shortages for the future.

Yet, we didn't realize how our socialist president would actually provide subsidies for and encourage a mass migration of unskilled and highly difficult-to-integrate groups** into our country; resulting in an unacceptable unemployment rate with laborers willing to work for bare minimum wages...

In addition of the normal influx of Colombians, Ecuadorians, Bolivians and Peruvians — Chile experienced massive numbers from Venezuela, which our country absorbed.

Yet Bachelet encouraged and subsidized additional immigrants, which eventually resulted in large groups of unemployed day workers in the streets with cardboard signs looking for work — which caused deep resentment and anger.

For the Aconcagua Valley, unemployment was approximately 6% in 2014, 11% in 2015 and a stunning 18% BEFORE the current pandemic.

Clearly the liberal socialist immigration policies betrayed the abilities of the poor and underprivileged to earn more than the minimum salary because of the expanded labor pool.

Sort of contrary to the Marxist-socialist “Unidad Popular” dictum: “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.”

*Bachelet received her university education in Communist East Germany.

**This included Middle Eastern refugees and until our President Piñera stopped it — Chile received a fully loaded chartered 767 each day from Haiti. Not only unskilled, but also non-Spanish literate people.

Bolsonaro Favors Family Friends for The Federal Police and Ministry of Justice
President Jair Bolsonaro plans to fill the command posts of the Federal Police and the Ministry of Justice with people close to his family, but he fears that lawsuits in the courts will hinder his plans.
Bolsonaro wants Jorge Oliveira, who currently occupies the General Secretariat of the Presidency, to take over the position of former minister Sergio Moro. A lawyer and major in the reserves, Oliveira was previously chief of staff to deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PSL-SP).
Alexandre Ramagem, the current director-general of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency, will command the Federal Police. He became close with the Bolsonaro clan when he provided security Bolsonaro in the 2018 campaign.
Ramage became a friend of Carlos Bolsonaro, who is the target of PF investigation. In an inquiry led by the Supreme Court, the police named the president's son as one of the organizers of a criminal fake news scheme.
President Bolsonaro replied, “so what,” when asked about his choice. “Before I knew my children, I knew Ramagem. Should this be vetoed? Should I choose someone who is a friend of someone else?” He said.

    Tovarish Gollum,

You truly are an USEFUL IDIOT, and the quote attributed to Lenin can be found in his papers addressed to Comrade Molotov can be fully accessed online — of which even a partial translation can be found:
”Дураки, которые защищают нашу идеологию сами являются полезными идиотами.“ [Capitalist] ”fools that defend our idealogy [are] themselves useful idiots...”

Remarkably, the teachings of the evil bastard that you and Enrique worship is highly detailed in his malevolent plan to Molotov — for the entire destruction of Western Civilization:
    https://www.loc.gov/exhibits/archives/ae2bkhun.html

I suggest you read as Lenin was diabolically brilliant — and you could learn from him.

One of the greatest gifts my father taught me — as the Marxist socialists were expropriating (stealing) our farmland, was to know your enemy well. QED

I never thought Bolsonaro was too bright. He wouldn't have had a chance of becoming president in normal times, but when the whole political establishment has been discredited... can't see things going back to normal for a while.

A fake news department in government sounds like something from one of the old Iron Curtain countries. We're living in strange times.

Lol at Gollum quoting WIKIPEDIA to say something isn't a reliable source. I've never seen such a hypocrite.

I dispute your description of Gollum... there's nothing useful about him.

Absolutely beautiful day here in Chicureo!

As I wrote in another thread, you can't make Gollum any more idiotic than simply letting the creature itself look like the USELESS IDIOT that the creature demonstrates in its own words... ...but then again, there is nothing useful about the creature...

The link I generously provided is from THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS... (At the bottom of the document shows its source to one of the largest collections of information in the world)

Outside the former USSR, the library has one of the largest collections of documents about Vladimir Lenin...

And as you recognize, Wikipedia is helpful, but is not always a reliable source of fact. (Although factual Communism itself is an oxymoron...

Today's outstanding le déjeuner was sandwiches of smoked bacon, romaine lettuce, heirloom tomato and avocado on toasted sourdough bread, accompanied with fresh lemonade. (The only thing purchased was the flour, olive oil, bacon and the sugar for the lemonade.)

I'm having great fun with ma mariée créative working with AutoCAD software , which I highly recommend. It's easy to learn, relatively user friendly and 3-D rendering is incredible.

You can even use it free for 30 days: https://latinoamerica.autodesk.com/products/autocad/free-trial?plc=ACDIST&term=1-YEAR&support=ADVANCED&quantity=1

(You will note in my post in the other thread, the URL was wrong.)

We're learning about high altitude cooking and how to integrate the newest appliances from Europe which are amazing themselves.

    ¡Saludos!

OK, B is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he was useful when he was needed.
It’s unfortunate he can’t keep some of his polemic opinions to himself, but he has his merits.
When I think of the alternative, or, the aggravation of what was already bad and getting worse under the PT, I have to be philosophical about it.
“He wouldn't have had a chance of becoming president in normal times”…no less than Lula did in 2003. But what are “normal times” in Brazil, to you ?...... many things are not normal here when compared to 1st world countries….

And remember, fake news became a significant propaganda tool under the PT (to cover up their shit, boast about what they should've done and didn't, and to attack their opponents' reputations), and is now coming from both sides…and in the USSR it only came from one.
But why is Gollum so concerned with where the expression “useful”, or “useless idiot” came from ? what matters is that they both suit T(erry) down to a T.

Talking of Gollum looks like his quote /claim (Socrates) kind of backfired, didn’t it ? Not one iota of proof, yet, didn’t stop him making a false claim. When caught with his pants down, he usually blames the messenger, in this case GoodReads (as he did with Ana Farah, on his favorite subject, Brazil’s toilets).
Even if GoodReads has millions of members, their numbers are proof of absolutely nothing…seems that the quote “ ' ‘when the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of losers' emerged roughly around 2008 and appears to have no traceable history prior to that”.

As to Ana Farah, why should I refute her “opinion” ? after all isn't she entitled to it ? and it proves what ? nothing really, only indicates that she must be referring to the poor areas in Brazil....such as your home, while you allegedly lived here - probably another lie - and which, like most slums, the toilet was/is either a bucket or a hole in the floor....Ah sorry, almost forgot the plastic bin...

“OK, B is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he was useful when he was needed.”

    Soooo, he's a useful idiot? ;)

You don't think anyone else could have beaten Haddad, if B had not run for President? Today I saw some Brazilians saying they actually missed Temer, since at least he would/could have worked with Congress to deal with the epidemic and would not make the country look bad internationally. But although Temer was tremendously unpopular, there were a lot of people who would vote for anyone but Haddad, would they not have voted for whoever made it into the second round?

By normal times I meant pre-lava jato - before it was revealed just how corrupt the political class in Brazil is. I think that is what made people want to elect an outsider.

IMO a key part of the fake news explosion is the rise of social networks, allowing anyone to spread lies and nonsense, not only governments and the media. It's kinda different from the USSR, who were able to prevent their citizens learning the truth. Nowadays the truth is available but people either don't want to hear it (because it doesn't say what they want to hear) or it gets buried under a blizzard of 'alternative facts'. Anyway, AFAIK it didn't really become common until after the PT were no longer in power. Sounds like what they did was just plain old government propaganda.

As for Gollum, he's determined to be right all the time and pathologically unable to let an argument go even when it's clearly pointless. That's why Chicureo can always wind him up and he goes deep into denial when someone shows he's wrong. His lack of self awareness is hilarious; starting every comment with libelous insults and then saying slander is the tool of losers. He's the perfect example of the Dunning-Kruger effect.
