On April 19, Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, climbed onto a truck outside army headquarters in Brasília to fire up protesters who were calling for a shutdown of Congress and the Supreme Court. Soon after, according to Folha de S. The election of “resfriadinho” Bolsonaro probably is the most typical case of lawfare at work in which we saw the legislature, the media, and the judiciary working together -- the impeachment by Congress of predecessor Dilma Rousseff softened the path for a ferocious “anti-corruption” media campaign enthusiastically implemented at the judicial level by now disgraced former judge Sergio Moro, who then directed his fire at former president Lula da Silva, who was sent to the slammer not on evidence but on the judge's “deep personal conviction.”
Da Silva, who at the time was riding high in the opinion polls, was found guilty of having accepted an appartment as bribe and incarcerated. This of course hampered Fernando Haddad, the candidate designated to succeed Lula, and the maneuver to plant a president loyal to the real power was successfully accomplished.
Only now the scheme is now eating alive its own creators.
