Argentina on 22 February celebrates Antarctica Day, which commemorates the inauguration of the Meteorology and Magnetic Observatory on Laurie Island, South Orkney Islands, in 1904, which would later become Orcadas Station, a historic milestone which marked the beginning of Argentina's uninterrupted presence in Antarctica.     On January 4th 1907, a formal diplomatic note was presented to Argentina's Foreign Ministry emphasizing that the South Orkney's are a British possession’’... in order to remove any possible misconception as to the legal basis on which operation of the meteorological station on Laurie Island in the South Orkneys had been transferred to the Argentine Meteorological Office...” (Antarctic Cases, UK -v- Argentina; UK –v- Chile, International Courts of Justice, March 1956, p62). The UK has maintained a base at Signy Island, South Orkneys since 1947. (History of Signy, British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge).
