Magallanes with first elected governor wants to freeze or relocate concessions for news salmon farms

Next Thursday Magallanes Region will be living a historic event, for the first time an elected governor will be taking office in Punta Arenas. Until now it was the central government, Santiago that appointed the official, but since the political and social reforms that emerged from the 2019/20 upheavals including the current assembly to draft a new constitution, things have changed in Chile particularly exposing the fragility of the so-called “Chilean model”. And in Magallanes, an issue outstands, salmon farming in maritime spaces.

Punta Arenas expects 40 vessels and 226 calls for the 2021/22 cruise season starting next October

Punta Arenas port authorities announced over the weekend that they expect the 2021/22 cruise season to begin next 19 October when “Sylvia Earle” calls at Chile's extreme south terminal. She will be the first of some 226 calls, so far, from forty international cruise vessels to which must be added those from domestic companies.

FAO Food Price Index, down 2,55 in June but still 33.9% higher than a year ago

Global food commodity prices fell in June for the first time in 12 months, according to a benchmark United Nations report. The FAO Food Price Index averaged 124.6 points in June 2021, down 2.5% from May, but still 33.9% higher than its level in the same period last year. The decline in June marked the first drop in the Index following twelve consecutive monthly increases

Argentina Saturday won the Copa América football tournament by beating hosts and defending champions Brazil 1-0 at the iconic Maracaná Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Ángel DiMaría scored halfway through the opening half.

Fernández hosts Argentine Independence Day ceremony at historic Tucumán house amid protests

Argentine President Alberto Fernández Friday headed the celebrations marking the 205th anniversary of the country's Declaration of Independence. From the historic house in the Argentine province of Tucumán, where dignitaries of the provinces signed the declaration in 1816, Fernández said Argentines were “close to the tomorrow we want,” in a message posted on social media.
