Disclaimer & comment rulesWhile I am a life member of the NRA and own two long guns in the US, I would prefer to be able to delegate the use of deadly force to professional, well trained, honest and subordinate law enforcement. This is not always readily available in rural areas of the US, hence the logic of keeping a personal recourse. In Brazil I would prefer the same, but experience shows that the police in neither urban nor rural areas meet any of the essential criteria above. One recourse for the law abiding citizen should be armed self-defense, but without a restructuring of the executive arm of the government that will not result in a long term improvement in security for the average citizen.

You can own rifles, however they also MUST be kept at a club, can only be single shot and any magazine crimped, so you can only have one round in the chamber and one in the mag.
Farmers etc. Can get licences for shotguns and rifles for “pest control”, strictly limited in what calibre you can get depending on the intended use and under strict conditions for storage. All must also be single shot with any mag crimped.
We still have shootings, but very rarely, especially in comparison to the US.
I have three airguns which I use for target shooting, none of which require a license.
I have heard NRA supporters saying ‘you can take my gun from my cold dead hand’, well that is pretty much what happens in the UK.
All in all a much safer way to be.

Our asado was enjoyed on the garden terrace beneath the grape arbor attended by ten adults and four grandchildren. Our Bocce tournament and family gossip was our entertainment for today.
The delicious roast pork was so tender it did not require a knife and the skin was ideally crispy — although the accompanying dishes were superb — especially the salads with even the very first harvest of asparagus from the Vicuña area.
For dessert — our Schwiegertochter made an Erdbeerkuchen consisting of layers of sponge cake and crème fraîche topped with sliced fresh strawberries from the coast.
The only sad part of the day was all our guests just departed — leaving Madame and I now alone at the farmhouse.
Tomorrow the first of 980 young grafted avocado trees arrive and our goal is to plant the entire 2.44 hectare newly created hillside plot completely by Wednesday. With good luck — we expect our first commercial harvest no earlier than 2026.

One thing we are very alarmed is the rapid rise in rates for sea-container freight. Although we were fortunate to pre-purchase space early as costs have risen above 400%! The last quarter of 2021 and the first half of next year we expect a substancial inflation of food prices worldwide!

We waiting for the first arrival of nursery trees today and will be extraordinary occupied with the planting until Wednesday.
One of the reasons why we grow avocados is that it provides a healthy alternative to the junk food that has caused an obesity problem across our major export market — the USA.

A dear grower friend from the coast dropped by a case of freshly harvested artichokes which we plan to prepare in the next few days.

Although an embittered individual obviously derides my family’s joy in farming — we exceptionally enjoy it with a devoted passion! The family gardens, vineyards and orchards are cared for as they truly are a part of our family.
Even the three decades old wine vineyard we pulled out — we enjoy the grapewood fires that even were used for yesterday’s asado and feel sentimental as they continue to provide benefits as even the ash is incorporated into the compost pile.
We have created nearly 2½ hectares from a steep rocky hillside — including trenching an ideal soilbed and are now planting carefully selected grafted nursery trees. (We’re installing the latest Israeli CropX Technologies sensors and each of the trees has its own digital ID which will be constantly monitored.)
Our table grapes are in early bud emergence and the garden is already being planted with a number of new vegetable varieties — so we truly do enjoy our little campesino agricultural enterprise.
This evening’s planned fare is grilled salmon filets with honey glazed carrots and roasted purple Peruvian fingerling variety potatoes accompanied with a chilled Vińa Arboleda Sauvignon Blanc.

Another really gorgeous enjoyable morning here in the Aconcagua Valley!
With a bit of luck — we might be able to plant the remaining trees in the newly created area by the end of today! (Each tree is carefully placed into a water immersed prepared planting hole.)
Breakfast was part of last night’s leftover defrosted salmon prepared with poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce over toasted sourdough bread and perfectly prepared caffè latte.
Skippy pretends not to be from Utah — but he continuously and specifically refers to the Mormon founded Brigham Young University in all his ridiculous amusing psychological studies…
…it truly does give me a satisfying sensation of schadenfreude which he provides…
…one comment from Skippy is highly accurate as “we still have plenty of Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon” — that we expect to serve again at our annual 18th of September employee fiesta at the farm. (We we’re fortunate to acquire a monstrous number of cases at a ridiculous low cost!)

When we are successful in the planting — it’s essential to lay the drip irrigation lines as rapidly as possible because although avocados are so water sensitive — young trees could possibly go into a transplant shock which is why we’ve reserved a few additional trees with the nursery in case of trees not surviving.
Normally I’d have just an empanada — but with Madame’s assistance — today’s simple le déjeuner is a delicious honey lemon avocado grilled chicken salad — very similar to the lime flavored version in the video:
