The massive social welfare program, Auxilio Brasil, promoted by the administration of president Jair Bolsonaro was passed this week in the Lower House and is expected to be approved in the Senate where leaders have promised to address it as a priority. Read full article

On the one hand, extending and expanding bolsa familia, is an important safety net for the poorest of Brazil's society; on the other hand, exceeding the budget ceiling is likely to ascerbate the real's already weak position against 'hard' currencies, currently at 1 : 5.6 against the US $. It would have been wiser to secure funding for auxilio by cutting extant pork barrel spending.
