In my opinion, Argentina should not even answer that question.

They will not answer. That would require addressing the Falklands Government. An acknowledgment that Argentina cannot handle. It may be easier, just to fly around Argentine airspace. Cut out the problem, as it were.

@Bras, your opinion is not terribly important. However, if Argentina were ever actually serious about their proposal of a “humanitarian” flight for Chileans and others to use to visit family, perhaps they ought to look at this as it comes at no cost to their economy.

When the Argentine submarine went missing didnt Britain help in trying to find it, why ? because it is the decent thing to do, Argentina should do the same and do the decent thing instead of trying to make it political.

As I understand it, the issue with flights near Argentina is permission to divert in the event of a problem requiring an emergency landing.

Argy air traffic control has to be notified and agree in advance any flights which may need to enter their airspace.

Not to say Argentina wouldn’t allow an emergency landing in the event, but Civy aircraft rules require such agreements before they can take off.

It is quite clear that this humanitarian request has been refused for purely political reasons.

They probably feel much more important now, having actually managed to affect something in the S. Atlantic.

Hi, while you guys continue with your usual atack to the fascist and evil argentinean government, let me tell you that Argentina had made a counter offer of giving direct flights from the islands to Chile, Being Punta Arenas or any other destination in Chile taking account on covid restrictions in Chile. The argentine government is still waiting for a response.

May be the islanders can use their map where the Argentine mainland figured as a sea.
    Cheers.

I think I read somewhere that Argentina, by international agreement, actually has control of and is responsible for the safety of the airspace over most of the Southern Atlantic Ocean below 50°S and west of 11°W, I am not certain of the actual parallels but it is near the number I quoted. This does not cover any land mass within this area or within a stipulated distance of the same land masses. That is why Argentina is being asked for clearance for the flight.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Firstly, the request for the charter flights was made first, before any Argentinian offer.

Secondly, they still insist on aerolineas Argentinas aircraft, knowing this is completely un acceptable.

There is no humanitarian reason why the aircraft must be Argy, this is an entirely political move by Argentina.

Maybe Argentina should use maps saying Falklands, then they would understand better, oh that’s right they did produce some, the first accurate documents in Argentina for a hundred years and then they burned them.

One step forward then two steps back, that’s Argentina for you.

Perhaps Argentina should answer the first request, before making a counter-offer, Libby.
    If only to be polite.

@MarkWhelan That is not entirely true. Argentina keeps requesting control of the southern ocean for that area but it is not responsible for airspace. Outside of the usual international boundaries, southern coast of the South American mainland, Falkland Islands etc, Argentina doesn't control any airspace. They don't like anything crossing their airspace from the Falkland Islands. They expect to be able to land anything they like in the Falklands however.

Perhaps Argentina should abide by the treaties that she is signatory to.

“Chicago Convention which she signed on 4 June 1946. Also known as:
The International Air Services Transit Agreement, 1944
containing what has come to be known as ”The Two Freedoms”.
    1) The privilege to fly across the territory of a state without landing;
    2) The privilege to land for non-traffic purposes; which she signed on 4 June 1946”.
