Brazil is betting strongly to become the main player in the development of oil and gas production in its northeast corner, where the state of Amapá shares proximity with French Guiana, Suriname, and Guyana, these two of which are set to become significant players in the hydrocarbons business.     Interestingly enough the offshore frontier near French Guyana was explored by Petrobras in the 1980's and no commercial horizons were found then. I performed the wireline logging on one of those wildcat plays. The article also states that “. . .highway network connected to a planned deepwater port in Guyana, giving parts of northern Brazil access to the Atlantic...” is part of this initiative, yet while a major bridge had been completed for 6 years, the customs and border police infrastructure on the Brazilian side was missing, so the bridge stood there as a testament to incompetence.

    Expect the same issues down the road on this initiative, sadly, because the underlying causes of graft and corruption are not dealt with.
