The drifting giant A68 iceberg released billions of tons of fresh water in South Georgia ecosystem

Scientists monitoring the giant A68a iceberg from space reveal that a huge amount of freshwater was released as it melted around the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. An estimated 152 billion tons of freshwater – equivalent to 20 x Loch Ness or 61 million Olympic sized swimming pools, entered the seas around the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia when A68a melted over three months in 2020/2021, according to a new study published this month by the British Antarctic Survey.

US now demands all foreigners be vaccinated to enter the country

The Government of the United States has announced that effective Jan. 22, foreigners wishing to cross into the country by land or by boat from Canada will also be required to submit proof of vaccination against COVID-19.

Aerolíneas Argentinas announces return of daily flights to Madrid

Starting in the coming month of April, Aerolineas Argentinas will resume its daily flights between Buenos Aires' Ezeiza airport to the Adolfo Suárez-Barajas terminal in Madrid. The frequency had been interrupted in 2020 due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Researchers detect around 60 million nests of Antarctic icefish in the Weddell Sea, Current Biology report.

Near the Filchner Ice Shelf in the south of the Antarctic Weddell Sea, a research team has found the world’s largest fish breeding area known to date. A towed camera system photographed and filmed thousands of nests of icefish of the species Neopagetopsis ionah on the seabed. The density of the nests and the size of the entire breeding area suggest a total number of about 60 million icefish breeding at the time of observation. These findings provide support for the establishment of a Marine Protected Area in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. A team led by Autun Purser from the Alfred Wegener Institute publish their results in the current issue of the scientific journal Current Biology.

The Argentine union of maritime workers SOMU Friday staged a protest at the Buquebús terminal in the port of Buenos Aires to keep ships from sailing off to Uruguay in demand of a due wage increase of 23% agreed upon last year.

Bomb found at former FARC political meeting point

Colombian police Friday found an explosive device ready to go off at a Bogotá restaurant which also serves as the political headquarters of former FARC combatants, it was reported. The venue, known as Casa Alternativa, is a meeting point for ex-fighters making arrangements for the March elections.
