FIG Reception in London: “Falkland Islanders still face threats to our very existence from our nearest neighbour”

A special Falkland Islands Government (FIG) London Office 40th anniversary reception was held in the Durbar Court at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on Wednesday, and brought to a close a year of events marking the 40th anniversary of the liberation of the Falkland Islands.

LATAM domestic pilots threatening with strike beginning 31 December

LATAM airlines domestic pilots are threatening with industrial action unless their pre-pandemic contract conditions are re-established. The fifty air professionals this week announced an “non-yielding” position since as happened with other Latam unions and officials, they are intent in recovering pre-pandemic benefits.

Croatia president to visit his “Chilean-Croatian” peer and Magallanes Region

Croatian president Zoran Milanovic is expected next week in Punta Arenas, extreme south of Chile, where he has been declared “illustrious visitor” given his position and the fact he is visiting Magallanes Region where a large Croatian community has been living for over a century.

Lula to announce some of his future ministers Friday

Brazil's President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva is expected to announce some of the names that will make up his cabinet once he takes office on Jan. 1 on Friday just before the quarterfinal football match between the South American country's national team and that of Croatia at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Environmental emergency decreed in Argentina's Tierra del Fuego due to forest fires

Authorities in the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego have declared an environmental emergency this week and extended a ban on lighting fires in wild areas until 2024 due to the increasing number of forest fires.

Ships sink in Montevideo Port dock collapse

A floating dock of the Tsakos shipping company in the port of Montevideo, where five ships were under repair, collapsed and two cranes fell into the water Thursday, leading to the partial sinking of three vessels, it was reported.

Putin reported having exit plan to Venezuela if Ukraine bid fails

Russian leader Vladimir Putin was reported to have an exit plan for Venezuela, should he fall from grace in Moscow if his country does not succeed militarily in Ukraine. Argentina and China were also said to have been under consideration but were eventually discarded.

Man hanged in Iran for violence in post-Amini protests

A man has been executed by hanging in Iran following his indictment for his participation in the nationwide protests since the Sept. 16 death of young Mahsa Amini while in morality police custody for not wearing the veil properly.
