Taiwanese authorities announced Wednesday in Asuncion a US$ 4,800,000 disbursement of a monetary donation to Paraguay's Health Ministry to be allocated to the Trauma Hospital, the Itauguá Hospital, and the Pediatric Children's Hospital of Acosta Ñu. It was the third installment of a US$ 14,992,733 donation from the Asian island for the “improvement of the Quality of Care of the Establishments of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare,” according to a statement from the Paraguayan Ministry.

The move is included in the memorandum of understanding between Paraguay and Taiwan (2018-2023).

The South American country's government explained the donations were to be used for important improvements, such as the construction of the oncology area of the General Pediatric Hospital “Niños de Acosta Ñu” and the acquisition of biomedical equipment.

Health Minister Julio Borba said this third disbursement marks another important milestone, as “it demonstrates the continuity and confidence that the Embassy of Taiwan places in our capabilities and in the future of healthcare in Paraguay.

”I highlight the financial support, as well as the valuable exchange of knowledge and experiences that have enriched our work,” he added. Borba also said Taiwan was a strategic ally in matters of cooperation seeking the welfare and progress of both peoples.

How demeaning that in an 'upper middle income country' the Paraguayan government still accepts donation for its basic health system a if it were a poor sub-Saharan African country. So much for 'national pride and sovereignty' when the crooks running the country are prepared to beg from Taiwan in exchange for freebies for themselves - nothing to do with any ideological commitment to free speech and democracy, of which Paraguay is hardly a shining example. Meanwhile the very rich get richer will the lowest tax burden in the Americas at 9.7% of GDP - and the health needs of the poor depend on grants from abroad.
