The Orkney Islands could change their status in the UK or even become a self-governing territory of Norway under new proposals. A motion will go before the council next week to investigate “alternative forms of governance”. Council leader James Stockan said Orkney does not get fair funding with its current relationship with the UK. Read full article

So tell me, what makes them Orkniers think they have a right to go?

Are they listed at the UN as a NSGT, like the Falklands?

    No.

Their main “beef” as I understand is with Edinburgh and has been for some time- little support in Orkneys or Shetlands for Scottish Independence. Hence the interest in looking at Isle of Man or Channel Is Status or even B.O.T, like Gib-Bermuda-Falklands etc.- or Norway as 0slo is closer than Edinburgh.

Orkney and Shetlands issues are with the governance of the Nationalistic SNP in Edinburgh , not the British government,

Anyways - the interest is more to do with with the Norwegian Wealth Fund, than them delightful blonde blue eyed Agnethas ’ and Björns’.

Whatever the Orkneys decide to do. It’s a little thung that our neighbours across the water don’t recognise called self determination. But like the Viking hordes we are bound to be subject to the pillaging of a little mind. Wait for it folks it won’t be a rapier wit just that of a letter opener. We all know to whom I refer.

    - As much as I would luuuuv to see all them beautiful Norse Isles returning to their Scandinavian womb..., chances for it to happen are negligibly small... :-(

    - Them Engrish have already uttered their last word 'bout the question...:
“The motion was given short shrift by the UK government in London.
First and foremost, there is no mechanism for the conferral of Crown dependency or overseas territory status on any part of the UK.... Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's spokesman told reporters...
But fundamentally, we are stronger as one United Kingdom..., we have no plans to change that...' he added.”

    - Funny though..., that them Engrish Sassenach Lowlanders won't accept the validity of the...: “PEOPLE's SELF-DETERMINATION PRINCIPLE” for their own citizens in their own (Orknøyene) soil..., but are more than happy to fully embrace the validity of the same...: “PEOPLE's SELF-DETERMINATION PRINCIPLE” for their own citizens in foreign (Islas Malvinas) soil...

Brainwash..., double standards and doublespeak anyone... ?

Since when was Orkney listed as a NSGT?

Those that are, have it - all the way up to cession. Those that ain't .... don't

Ya' are really putting your foot in the fire-ant hill this time...

    - Just imagine the face of poor Anglo poster “FIdescendent” above...!
You just destroyed his LA-LA LAND fantasy 'bout“...: ”Whatever the Orkneys decide to do...“

Now..., Copper..., as you should know...:
    - ”Neither the right of self-determination nor the principle of territorial integrity are absolute. Both must be applied in the context of the Charter and human rights treaties so as to serve the purposes and principles of the United Nations.“

    - And that's PRECISELY WHY..., the pertinent UN body repeats constantly..., in almost each one of their documents the same paragraph about the Malvinas/Falklands issue being a...: - ”SPECIAL AND PARTICULAR CASE”...

C24 Trunks? Don't make me laugh. UK has not engaged with the C24 since 1972 and the C24 has not recommended one of its Falklands resolutions for adoption by the UN since at least 200 when the format of the annual report changed. The C24 is a pantomime. Every year it adopts by consensus a resolution it knows that it will not recommend. A farce. The C24 is of no relevance, Trunks.

And I still do not THINK that you read this.

Self-determination comes in two colours, internal and external. Seems that only the NSGTs are entitled to the external version that includes cession. Seems the “Peoples Self-Determination Principle” just isn't to the taste of UN members.

    Go learn, old man.

If 99% (or even 50.1%) of the inhabitants of the Orkney or Shetland Islanders despised the British government, wanted absolutely nothing to do with them, had been invaded, bullied lied about and dismissed by the British government for half a century....and wanted to be part of Norway or even Australia, I am sure the British people would be very happy to let them go.

    However. that isn't the case.

But nice to see Think supporting self-determination of islanders....I would say there was hope he may learn humility and decency....but of course there isn't
