Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin stressed Tuesday that his country should bet on the development of the local semiconductor industry while speaking favorably about the reindustrialization process undertaken by the new government since Jan. 1.

“We must promote a green neo-industrialization, with decarbonization, with digitalization and innovation. Semiconductors are in everyday life, from video games to the war industry and Brazil must occupy its space, with excellent universities and diversified industry,” Alckmin underlined.

Alckmin, who is also Minister of Development, Industry, Foreign Trade, and Services, said during an event organized by the government in Brasilia that Brazil, as the largest Latin American economy, has the potential to occupy a space in global value chains as a semiconductor manufacturer.

“Brazil has suffered in the last decades a great, accentuated and premature deindustrialization and that is why it is now very important to discuss how we are going to promote a green and sustainable neo-industrialization,” Alckmin insisted.

He also highlighted the incentive of the Semiconductor Industry Technology Development Support Program, which eliminated federal taxes on the import of chips and components for photovoltaic panels until 2026.

Meanwhile, Management and Innovation Minister Esther Dweck also recalled that during the pandemic there was a shortage of microchips in the world, which demonstrated the strategic importance of the semiconductor sector.

“Brazil is once again an important world player and can also be an important technological player,” she pointed out.
