South Georgia Marine Protected Area review and workshop in December

The South Georgia South Sandwich Islands, SGSSI, Marine Protected Area is currently undergoing its second 5-year review. Following on from the highly successful science symposium held in June 2023 and an internal Protected Area Management Evaluation (PAME), GSGSSI will be hosting a review workshop in December.

Falklands pupil triumphs in annual Christmas card competition

Henrietta Barlow, a Year 3 student at the Infant Junior School and Camp Education in the Falkland Islands, has been crowned the winner of the Falkland Islands Government Office's (FIGO) Annual Christmas Card Competition. Mr. Richard Hyslop, the Falkland Islands Government Representative to the UK & Europe, presented Henrietta with a special prize and certificate in recognition of her festive design.

Lula picks Justice Minister for Supreme Court vacancy

Hamas releases six Argentine hostages

Six Argentine nationals were among the 11 hostages released Monday by the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas with assistance from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in another exchange with Israel for 30 prison inmates held by Tel Aviv. The humanitarian ceasefire for further swaps has been extended for another 48 hours, it was also reported.

Uruguay's National Institute of Statistics (INE) announced Monday in Montevideo that there were 3,444,263 people living in the South American country, a meager 1% growth from 2011 figures. Were it not for immigration, the Uruguayan population would have contracted, it was explained.

Outbreak of equine encephalomyelitis in several Argentine provinces

Argentina's Animal Health and Food Quality Service, SENASA, has officially reported positive results of alphavirus, equine encephalomyelitis from regional labs in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Corrientes and Santa Fe, where samples of nervous or dying horses were collected.

Mercosur and UAE to begin trade negotiations in the first half of next year

Brazil currently the chair of Mercosur has opened a consultation period until December 18 on a possible trade agreement between the South American block and the United Arab Emirates. The idea is to reach and listen to the private sector, scholars, civil society, academics and other interested parties.

Refit HMS Forth back on duty as Falklands patrol vessel

Falklands' patrol vessel HMS Forth, P222 has arrived back in the Islands to resume her duties as a guard ship following a refit and maintenance operation in Gibraltar.
