On March 30, the workers' movement called a march to Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires. Since 1976 the military regime had kidnapped and murdered thousands of citizens, suppressed the right to strike and prohibited union activity. Even so, fifty thousand people converged in the demonstration that took place under the slogan Peace, Bread and Work, among shouts of “Galtieri, son of a bitch!”, and ended with savage confrontations and more than three thousand people arrested.

Just two days later, on April 2, in the same square, one hundred thousand euphoric citizens raised patriotic flags and raised posters with the legend “Long live our Navy”, while a fervent cry advanced like the prow of a bestial ship: “Galtieri, Galtieri!”. The television showed the lieutenant general making his way through a roaring crowd that jostled for space to embrace him.
