    April FAO food prices index slightly higher, vegetable oils and cereals climbing

    Maize export prices increased, influenced by a robust import demand amidst mounting logistical disruptions as a result of infrastructure damages in Ukraine and concerns about Brazil's production

    The benchmark for world food commodity prices edged higher in April, as higher prices of meat and modest upticks for vegetable oils and cereals outweighed decreases in sugar and dairy product prices, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported.

    Ushuaia had an excellent cruise season and expects better in 2024/25

    With the cruise 2023/24 season technically over in Tierra del Fuego, the head of provincial ports, Roberto Murcia said it had been a very positive year and anticipated an even more promising season 2024/25 for Ushuaia with more vessels interested in the Antarctica tours.

    Paraguay will have a new UK Ambassador; Navai reappointed to El Salvador

    Ms Danielle Dunne has been appointed His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Paraguay in succession to Mr Ramin Navai who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment in El Salvador. Ms Dunne will take up her appointment during January 2025.

    Commonwealth Games confident on a host; Birmingham 2022, “complete success for UK economy”

    CGF President, Chris Jenkins OBE, said: “Birmingham 2022 was a spectacular, record-breaking Games that created iconic moments on and off the field, uniting the Commonwealth through sport.”

    The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has confirmed that it is considering multiple proposals to Host the 2026 Games, so it was announced following the April meeting of the Executive Board, with confirmation by the end of the month. And in related news UK Department for Sports highlighted the financial success of the Birmingham Games in 2022.

    Health authorities in the United States are warning about the latest version of Covid-19 with the appearance of the so-called FLiRT variations, which represent the new version of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which was detected the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in sewage samples. Between April 14 and 27, a FLiRT variant called KP.2 accounted for around 25% of the detections, up from about 10% in the previous two-week period ending April 13.

    Argentine President deepens support to Israel

    During his appearance at a Holocaust Remembrance event in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, Argentine President Javier Milei ratified his allegiance to Israel and insisted that “in a battle between good and evil, taking sides is a moral obligation.” The Argentine leader also noted that while some countries “turn their backs on Israel”, Argentina will be “by its side, always firm.”

    Paraguayan exports grow 15% in April

    Shipments to the Americas accounted for most of Paraguay's sales abroad last month

    Paraguay's Export Single Window Consortium (Convue) confirmed this week that shipments in the first four months of 2024 reached US$ 2,790 million, representing a US$ 380 million yoy increase as per the Single Export Window System (DGVUE), under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, based on certificates of origin.

    Second general strike against Milei under way

    The protest will be “forceful,” Pablo Moyano forecasted

    The Libertarian administration of President Javier Milei is going through the second general strike called for by the opposition General Labor Confederation (CGT) since it took office on Dec. 10, last year. The first such protest was staged on Jan. 24 with little success because at that time people were either on holiday or still enjoying their half-year bonuses that cushioned the predatory effects of Milei's measures on people's incomes.
