    Argentine Gov't submits bill to Congress providing for easier gun ownership or disposal

    The Pevaf ceased to be in force after Dec. 31, 2023, because no extension had been granted by Congress unlike in previous years

    The Argentine administration of President Javier Milei sent this week a bill to Congress to make legal gun ownership easier while at the same time encouraging holders wishing to do so to dispose of their weapons. According to the Security Ministry, there are some 800,000 unregistered firearms users nationwide.

    Argentine President Javier Milei landed Friday in Madrid after a refueling stopover in the Canary Islands, for a series of engagements, none including a member of the Spanish government or the royal house. Also aboard the ARG 01 aircraft was Presidential Secretary Karina Milei.

    Brazil to host 2027 women's football World Cup

    Brazil was chosen Friday by 119 votes to 78 to host the 2027 edition of the Women's Football World Cup, it was announced in Bangkok, Thailand, where the sport's governing body, FIFA, held its General Assembly. The South American country was preferred to the consortium formed by Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. It will be the tenth version of the competition and the first in this part of the globe.

    Colombian prison director gunned down by hitmen

    Col. Fernández had been threatened before. He retired from the Colombian police in 2017

    Retired Colombian Colonel Elmer Fernández, director of the La Modelo prison in Bogotá, was gunned down by hitmen Thursday, Justice Minister Nestor Osuna confirmed. The assassination was carried out down a national road north of the country's capital, it was explained. Fernández was not driving his vehicle.

    Despite victorious announcements from President Javier Milei's government, industrial activity in Argentina fell for the tenth consecutive month amid a growing loss of purchasing power. Interannually, a 17.2% drop was recorded after March's 4.7% decline. In addition, the first quarter of 2024 showed a year-on-year 11.7% slide.

    Uruguayan authorities came up with the so-called “Residence by rootedness” (“residencia por arraigo”) solution to help some 20,000 migrants who had their asylum requests rejected but would otherwise need a consular visa to stay in the country, it was announced in Montevideo.
