Chilean Supreme Court Justice Vivanco suspended for ties to corruption scandal

Chile's Supreme Court Monday suspended Justice Ángela Vivanco from her bench after she was found to be linked to a corruption case. In the meantime, the process for her permanent dismissal has been triggered. Vivanco may not be the only magistrate to lose her job to the scandal.

Heavy smoke from Bolivian fires threatens large parts of Argentina

A large cloud of smoke stemming from wildfires in Bolivia threatens to cover the skies of 15 Argentine provinces and even reach the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) between Monday and Tuesday, due to which “phenomena that may represent inconveniences or difficulties in the normal development in social life are expected,” according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

FAO August Food Price Index declined marginally, meat and cereals down, dairy and vegetable oil up

The benchmark for world food commodity prices declined marginally in August, as decreases in quotations for sugar, meat, and cereals outweighed increases in those for vegetable oils and dairy products, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported.

Argentina dispatches a research cruise on Patagonian toothfish

Argentina has launched a research cruise on Patagonian tooth fish (Dissostichus eleginoides) to collect more information on the reproduction physiology of the species. The fishing factory vessel San Arawa II left Ushuaia with a team of scientists from INIDEP, the Mar del Plata based Fisheries Research and Development Institute, and the cruise is expected to last some three weeks.

Croatian vessel halts traffic for 12 hours through Paraná Waterwa
