France's Parliament was unusually united this week in rejecting the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Union (EU) and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), thus yielding to protests from local farmers who fear unfair competition. The Senate gave its thumbs down Thursday, just one day after the Lower House did the same by 484 votes against 70. Read full article

    That France and Poland don’t have the power to block this outright, is true.

    However, what they can do and France has done in the past on similar matters, is block/delay everything else in the EU effectively bringing most things to a complete halt.

    It has always worked in the past, as the French say, ‘you can’t argue with an empty chair’.

    Although, it seems, no one has told Argentina this.

    Just because the European commission can force this through does not mean they will.

    This agreement is effectively dead.
