    Chilean Governor announces ambitious Tierra del Fuego tunnel project

    The initiative seeks to replace the current crossing of the Strait of Magellan by barge

    Governor Jorge Flies of the Chilean Magallanes and Antarctica Region announced a project to build an underwater tunnel linking the mainland with Tierra del Fuego, an initiative from which Argentina would also benefit. The proposal submitted during a National Conference on Policies for Extreme Zones in Chile seeks to replace the current barge 3.7 kilometers crossing through the Strait of Magellan. The 4-kilometer submarine tunnel would entail a US$1.5 billion investment.

    Sharp fall in unemployment in Brazil

    Marinho said that high interest rates have contributed to the slowdown in job creation

    According to the latest issue of Brazil's Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) Household Sample Survey, unemployment stood at 6.2% in the quarter ending last month, Agencia Brasil reported. It was the lowest mark since the measurement began being tracked in 2012. The previous quarter, ending in July, had a rate of 6.8%, while in the same quarter last year, ending in October, the rate stood at 7.6%.

    The US dollar closed for the first time above the psychological R$ 6 barrier on another turbulent day in Brazil's markets, Agencia Brasil reported. The local scene continued to reverberate after the spending cut package announced earlier this week by Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, also impacting the stock exchange scene during the day.

    Brazil's Air Force confirmed Friday the successful launch of an unmanned rocket into space. The unit was built with 100% national technology, it was also explained at the Barreira do Inferno Center in Parnamirim, in the State of Rio Grande do Norte.
