Argentine PNA to patrol Bolivia-bordering river

Argentine authorities have taken steps towards patrolling the Bolivia-bordering Bermejo River with Coast Guard (Prefectura Naval Argentina - PNA) units so as not to leave the neighboring country as the only one with an armed presence in the area, Security Minister Patricia Bullrich announced.

UN Chief condemns massacre in Haiti

UN Secretary-General António Guterres Monday condemned the slaughtering of over 180 people between Dec. 6 and 8 near Port-au-Prince after a gang leader was told that the victims, all or most of them aged over 60, had rendered a son of his ill through witchcraft.

Buenos Aires renews concern over asylum seekers in Caracas

Argentine authorities expressed their concern this weekend over the well-being of the six Venezuelan opposition asylum seekers who are housed at what used to be Buenos Aires' Embassy in Caracas and is now guarded by Brazil following the diplomatic breakup.

Hijacking of Mexican airliner thwarted

Mexican carrier Volaris' flight 3041 from León's Del Bajio Guanajuato Int'l to General Abelardo L. Rodriguez Int'l in Tijuana escaped a hijack attempt Sunday morning when the crew adopted the protocols in force and the sole perpetrator, identified as “Mario N,” ended up in custody.

Water levels at Yacyretá grow after heavy rains

Paraguayan authorities reported an increase in the water levels at the Yacyretá hydroelectric dam this weekend following heavy rains in recent days. Yacyretá's Hydrology Department issued a warning indicating that inflows had increased as a result of the rainfall recorded in the contributing basin and in Brazilian territory.

At least 110 massacred by Haitian rebel gangs

At least 110 people, all of them aged over 60, were slaughtered by rebel gangs in the Haitian town of Cite Soleil, not far from Port-au-Prince, which is one of the poorest and most violent areas in the Caribbean country. According to the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights (Rnddh) report released Sunday, the Viv Ansanm gang killed with machetes and bladed weapons at least 60 people on Friday and 50 on Saturday.
