    Falklands, Sea Lion oil development area EIS public consultation considered

    ExCo noted that Navitas has committed to making several amendments to the EIS as a result of the representations made and republishing the EIS in line with guidance.

    Following the public consultation for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Sea Lion Field Northern Development Area, Phase 1 and 2, submitted by Navitas Petroleum Development and Production Limited, the Executive Council (ExCo) considered the representations made, responses, and further information at an extraordinary meeting held on Thursday, November 7.

    Argentine President Javier Milei Wednesday ordered his country's already small mission to the Conference of Parties 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, to leave the event in rejection of the idea of climate change put forward by the so-called “Agenda 2030” which the Libertarian leader claims to oppose.

    Brazil: FM heralds softer approach to Venezuelan crisis

    Brazil does not intend to break up with Venezuela, Vieira stressed

    Brazil's Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira insisted Wednesday that it was time to appease the diplomatic differences with Venezuela and not “repeat the mistakes we made with Guaidó's self-proclamation.” He was referring to the arguably illegal appointment of then-Congressman as interim head of state between Jan. 23 2019 and Jan. 25 2023 after not recognizing the elections' outcome. In the end, President Nicolás Maduro was never removed from the Miraflores Palace and Guaidó's legitimacy eventually faded away, with only some countries recognizing him.

    Suicide bomber attacks Brasilia's key square

    The episode brought back memories of the Jan. 8, 2023, riots so further explosions or  havoc were feared

    Police have cordoned off Brasilia's Three Powers Square after two explosives were detonated 20 seconds apart near the Supreme Federal Court's (STF) headquarters and next to the House of Deputies respectively. The sole perpetrator of both attacks was killed in the incident. The devices were apparently homemade, the authorities said.

    Paraguay records US$ 57 million foreign trade surplus in October

    Imports went up and exports went down last month

    Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP) foreign trade (Comex) report released Wednesday in Asunción showed a US$ 57.1 million surplus last month after exports amounted to US$ 13.6649 billion against imports worth US$ 13.6077 billion. In other words, sales fell 4.5% yoy while purchases grew 5.1%.

    Uruguay quality beef complies with EU demands on deforestation, sustainability and traceability

    Uruguayan beef is top quality with access to the most demanding global markets

    The protein consumption of Uruguayans has averaged some 95 kilos per person, a few more kilos than back in 1918, when after reaching a peak of 87, had begun to fall. Of the total 95 kilos, 46 have been beef, with the rest chicken and pork, according to Conrado Ferber, head of the Uruguay National Meats Institute, INAC.

    6-year prison sentence against CFK upheld

    CFK was acquitted of illicit association but the prosecution will appeal the ruling

    A federal court of appeals in the City of Buenos Aires Wednesday unanimously upheld the six-year prison sentence on former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (CFK), who had been found guilty in December, 2022, of fraudulent administration in the so-called Vialidad Nacional case. She was also disenfranchised for life from public office. The scandal involved numerous public works in the province of Santa Cruz awarded to businessman Lázaro Báez in fudgy dealings.

    Macron adding Buenos Aires and Santiago to G20 South American tour

    Macron is launching a new phase in France's ties with South America

    French President Emmanuel Macron will be making state visits to Argentina and Chile as part of his South American tour to attend the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, it was confirmed in diplomatic circles. Macron will first get together with his Argentine colleague Javier Milei to discuss climate change and other bilateral issues between Nov. 16 and 17. Then, he will head for Brazil's gathering of world leaders on Nov. 18 and 19. And then he will travel to Santiago for talks with Gabriel Boric Font.
