Mount Pleasant Complex is marking its 40th year as an Royal Air Force fighter and transport presence in the Falkland Islands. Some fitty three kilometers southwest of the capital, Stanley, MPC was officially opened on 12 May 1985 by Prince Andrew, and became fully operational the following year, May 1986, making it the newest permanent air base for the RAF. an amazing feat of engineering over a short time scale with the finished product opened by a favourite prince and member of the british armed forces involved in the 1982 liberation.

It’s Mount Pleasant Complex part of the MODs Directorate of Overseas Bases. It’s managed by UK Strategic Command a tri-service base. Whilst the RAF operate the Aerodrome aspect the defence of the islands relies on Naval and Army (as much as the RAF) contingents as well as civilian support from contractors and Civil Servants. When you focus on one aspect your view skews the contributions to the Islands defence from the other services which are arguably as important.
