Disclaimer & comment rulesIt was a bit surreal joining the QE2 off Ascension. It looked and was a magnificent ship. I have great respect for those volunteer crew members that stayed on board and looked after us on our way South.
May 19th, 2025 - 03:30 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I remember one cabin steward managed to collect tins of Nivea face cream from her fellow stewards so that we could apply this to our exposed skin to help abate wind burn and smell nice!.
The steady tramp of the Gurkha snake as it wound itself around the ship was an abiding memory and painful too as we hauled ourselves up flights of stairs carrying full kit.
And finally, the generosity of the crew in showering the landing crafts with cartons of cigarettes, as we cross decked at South Georgia.
Good bunch, good ship, everlasting memories..
We will never forget the sacrifice of everyone involved , civilian or military,
