The Paraguayan government Monday reported some unauthorized activity on President Santiago Peña's official X account, suggesting a possible hack. The account posted a false claim about Peña announcing legislation to recognize Bitcoin as legal tender, which was quickly debunked by other official channels.

Paraguay’s Cyber Incident Response Team (CERTpy) and X worked to resolve the issue, and Peña regained control of his account. He thanked CERTpy and X for their swift response, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity and the need for a secure digital ecosystem. The incident led to the postponement of the National Cybersecurity Strategy 2025-2028 launch, originally scheduled for Tuesday, with no new date announced.

”The CERTpy team (Paraguay's Cyber Incident Response Team of the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications - MITIC) is already working together with the X platform to clarify the situation,“ the Paraguayan Government said in a statement.

”We ask citizens to disregard any recently published content until an official confirmation is issued. We will be informing through official channels,“ the document further noted.

”I express my appreciation to the CERTpy team and X for their quick and professional action in the face of the security incident in my official X account,“ Peña posted later Monday after regaining control of his account. ”Cybersecurity is key, and these events show us that we must all contribute to building an ecosystem,” he added.
