Uruguayan La Libertad Avanza fails to overcome first hurdle

Uruguay issues Swiss franc bonds for the first time

Uruguay issued sovereign bonds in Swiss francs for the first time Thursday, totaling 320 million (about US$400 million) to help finance a US$6 billion fiscal deficit in 2025. The bonds, with five- and ten-year terms, carry an average annual interest rate of 1.33%. Economy Minister Gabriel Oddone highlighted the favorable interest rates and noted that Uruguay was the only Latin American country currently issuing bonds in this currency, tapping into a market of high-quality investors.

Argentine music legend Lalo Schifrin dies aged 93

Argentine composer Lalo Schifrin, who authored the iconic Mission: Impossible theme and other film and TV scores, including Dirty Harry, Cool Hand Luke, Bullitt, Voyage of the Damned, The Amityville Horror, The Sting II, and Mannix, died Thursday from pneumonia complications in Los Angeles, aged 93.

Ecuadorean authorities confirmed Wednesday that José Adolfo Macías Villamar, alias “Fito,” leader of the “Los Choneros” drug trafficking gang, who escaped from a Guayaquil prison in January 2024, has been recaptured.

Paraguayan Air Force receiving brand new aircraft this week

The first four Brazilian-built single-engined Embraer A-29 Super Tucano aircraft will arrive in Paraguay this Friday, flown by Paraguayan pilots, trained by the manufacturers, Paraguayan Air Force Chief, Gen. Julio Fullaondo, announced Wednesday.

Measles is “more terrible” than Covid-19, says Bolivian president

Chilean president becomes first-time father

Violeta Boric Carrasco, daughter of Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font and his partner, environmental chemist and former professional basketball player Paula Carrasco, was born Wednesday evening at the Clinical Hospital of the University of Chile in Santiago, making the child the first ever born to a sitting president Carlos Ibáñez del Campo’s offspring in 1928 and 1930. The birth was confirmed after 11 pm local time.
