One miner killed, five still missing in Chile

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake at around 5.30 pm Thursday triggered a collapse at the El Teniente copper mine in Chile’s O’Higgins Region, killing one worker and injuring nine others, with five of them still missing Friday afternoon. The incident occurred 1,200 meters underground in the Andesita project. The fatal victim has been identified as Paulo Marín Tapia.

US tariffs: Argentina and Uruguay charged only 10%

As the new tariffs scheme established by US President Donald Trump became effective Friday, Uruguay and Argentina were among the least affected countries, with surcharges of only 10%, a steep difference from Canada's 35% or Brazil's 50% and a default 15% surcharge unless otherwise specified.

Trump announces 35% tariffs on Canadian products

US President Donald Trump has raised the tariff rate on Canadian imports from 25% to 35%, effective August 1. US State Department website advisories for travelers to Antarctica

The U.S. State Department has renewed two of its website Travel Advisories for Antarctica reminding travelers to “increase basically” their situational awareness in the area containing some of the edgiest and most volatile conditions. The advice, revised on 28 July 2025, warns of the dangers of the continent’s harsh and unpredictable weather, which can change at short notice and scupper travel plans. The advisory also cites the region’s lack of emergency medical care that could further endanger visitors.

Transformed St Helena veteran vessel will be visiting Falklands in 2026/2027

Falkland Islands residents, originally from the island of St. Helena, most probably during the next year, might see the revival of a vessel that for many decades was the only link with South Africa.
